The first instance of a paranormal occurrence the viewer sees is in Layer 01 when Lain is in class, the board becomes blurry, and outlets open in her fingers with ectoplasm emitting from them.

Aliens
Another instance of this is in layers 09 and 11. In the first appearence, in Layer 09, the alien appears in front of Lain and has grey skin, a small body, with long arms and an over-sized head. It's eyes are large, almond-shaped, and dark. In the second appearence, in Layer 11, it appears in the room of Alice Mizuki, with the same body but with the face and personality of Lain. In conceptual drawings featured in the Serial Experiments Lain DVD boxset, the alien with Lain’s face and personality that appears in front of Alice is called “Glain,” as in Grey+Lain. In both layers, the aliens are wearing green and red striped sweaters, which is likely a reference to the film A Nightmare on Elm Street.

How to contribute
If you're not sure where to begin contributing, take a look at Special:ShortPages and Special:WantedPages for lists of pages that could use attention the most. For now, the primary focus is to get information into this wiki; cleaning it up and making it more presentable can always be done later if you are concerned about the quality of your writing.
What do ya'll think about moving the quick links to the side bar and having the Serial Experiments Lain page move to Main Page and then delete Serial Experiments Lain?

Merging episode summaries, scripts, analyses?
I think it makes more sense to have a unified description including the scripts, summaries, analyses,, of episodes. The point is to have one document that does all of that. Perhaps marked up in a way that makes it easy to look at only certain aspects. Lainwashed Pseudofan---Now with more soap! 19:50, 9 September 2020 (UTC)

I'd agree with putting summary and analysis on the same article, but I do feel that the script is a bit different and deserves its own page because it's not really encyclopedic content, and is more just a data dump of source content. == Lain history ==
Is it alright to talk about the history of the Lain community itself here? Quintuplicate (talk) 00:18, 31 January 2022 (UTC)

If you mean in the wiki itself, then yes, absolutely. I only request that you be mindful of how personal the information being posted is. I will admit that I will be more active in editorial control of language in topics relating to real world people and events, to try to ensure a neutral and factual tone is preserved. Bytor (talk) 17:05, 31 January 2022 (UTC)
Does Wikipedia's No original research rule apply here? Quintuplicate (talk) 08:27, 20 February 2022 (UTC)

I'm going to say no, but it isn't something I want to actively encourage. If you choose to do research and post the findings here in a way that is relevant then that's fine, but I think maintaining verifiability and npov is all the more important in that context. Bytor (talk) 20:41, 20 February 2022 (UTC)
Local area articles
Would it be OK to make articles like "Los Angeles" as a more permanent space to refer to and a resource hub when planning meetups of Lain fans? We have threads like this but they're ephemeral and in any case people from different regions are all mixed up together so it's not much of a help. Kind of like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/LA or https://geohashing.site/geohashing/Los_Angeles,_California only for the Lain community.--Quintuplicate (talk) 16:49, 13 March 2022 (UTC)

I don't think this is the place for planning events - that would should happen in the community that is doing the event. I also don't think making an article for the location would be the right way to handle reporting the event. Instead, I think if meetups happen that are notable, the appropriate place would be on an article about the entity doing the meeting; so in this case, lainchan. A teacher is seen copying some C code onto the chalkboard in Layer 01 just before Lain's fingertips begin to emit ectoplasm. It features a yen symbol instead of a backslash in an escape sequence; this is because certain japanese fonts render the backslash character as the yen symbol, such as the UD Digi Kyokasho font family. It is unclear whether or not this is intentional or holds any significance. Part of the code is not visible because the teacher is standing in the way. It reads as follows:

In Layer 07, during class, Lain is surreptitiously working on her HandiNAVI instead of paying attention. For a few seconds, her NAVI's screen is visible, and we can see her rapidly scroll through two files of Common Lisp source code, named CRowView.CL and Afx-n-nPrv-View.CL. Text from both of the files are visible in the game as well, in the video file Dc1023, "communication."

CRowView.CL
CRowView.CL contains code for John Conway's Game of Life. The creators probably selected this code because of its seemingly omnipotent implications (i.e. creating worlds and life).

Afx-n-nPrv-View.CL
Afx-n-nPrv-View.CL is the source for a code walker. This was probably included for its tongue-in-cheek reference to Apple in a section of code that is commented out.

Within the context of Serial Experiments Lain, metaphorize (メタファライズ)　is to project a digital incarnation of one's personality into the Wired. Lain is highly admired in the Wired partly because of her ability to metaphorize herself so completely.
Usage
The word is used several times in the original Japanese dialogue of the anime as well as at least once in the English dub, and even flashes across the screen once in Layer 07, misspelled. In the English dub and subtitles, it is sometimes mistranslated as "metamorphosis," or some variation thereof. This might be because "metaphorize" is not a commonly used word in the English language, not even appearing in most dictionaries.

Trivia
The word was used in the same sense in Alice in Cyberland, a game and OVA written by Chiaki Konaka.
Calls are sent and received using NAVIs, presumably over IP. Though its name implies a means of video messaging, it seems to be used primarily for real-time communication.

Its first and only appearance in the anime is in the second half of Layer 11, in which Alice is seen chatting with Juri on her desktop NAVI. Juri makes specific reference to the rumours of Alice and a teacher during their conversation. After the call ends, Alice receives an unsettling visit from Greyn. The next day at school, Juri and Reika have no memory of the rumours of Alice and the teacher, and when Alice tries to remind Juri of "yesterday's CU Mail," Juri professes not to have any recollection of their exchange.

A videoconferencing system of the same name is used extensively in the Alice in Cyberland PlayStation game, the scenario of which was written by Chiaki Konaka.
Long summary
<p style="text-align:justify">The very, very familiar opening of the city at night. A female voice says, “I’ll tell this only to you. You’re the only one who doesn’t know what happened in this society, and what is going on.”</p>

<p style="text-align:justify">[Title: SOCIETY Layer:07]</p>

<p style="text-align:justify">It is twilight. Outside of Lain’s window is a grouping of wires. The wires are all coiled together in a manner reminiscent of internal organs. Lain’s Navi system is even larger than ever. It fills most of her room. Lain is seated in front of her Navi. She is once again having a conversation with the voices from the Wired. Lain says, “No, it’s not.. I’m just looking at …” The voices communicate via strange sounds. Lain says, “In the Wired… I will change.” A strange sound is heard then Lain says, “I’m not certain.” Another strange sound is heard. Lain asks, “Who?” then turns her head towards the doorway. There stands her sister Mika. Mika attempts to speak but can only make guttural sounds, “a….e…” Lain asks, “My sister?” Lain then turns back to her Navi. “My sister has changed nowadays.” She pauses. “I wonder.” Lain pauses again. “ I don’t know.” The Navi responds with more strange sounds. Suddenly the word ”WARNING” flashes on her Navi screen.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify">The scene shifts to show an infrared style camera scanning people in a crowd. A male voice declares, “I know that the Wired and the real world have a linear connection. I can exist anywhere.” A message flashes across the camera screen in English, “ I am the best.” The man’s voice continues, “No matter where my flesh is, I can send my consciousness anywhere.” The voice belongs to a bizarre man. He is walking around the city wearing a strange head-mounted display apparatus on his head. It is connected to a large backpack which seems to weigh heavily between his shoulders. People in the crowd cast curious glances in his direction before moving out of his way. He is walking with a broad smile across his face. He seems to be bobbing his head to sounds only he can hear.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify">An office door is pushed open by an attractive female. She crosses the room and seats herself across from a man typing on a computer keypad. She appears to be his secretary as she announces his next meeting time. “EMA Motors Consortium. It’s time for dinner with them.” He looks up at his secretary. He appears to be somewhat young and must be very important to have such a grand office. He grunts to acknowledge her statement. There seems to be a flirtatious quality to their interaction. The secretary does a little ‘Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct’ crossing and uncrossing of her legs. Her boss is watching. His Navi interrupts the moment by announcing he has mail. The boss informs the secretary, “Wait for three minutes. I’ll come downstairs.” The secretary acknowledges his statement, gets up, and leaves. The boss waits until he hears her close the door before activating his mail. A strange symbol appears. It looks like the compass used for drawing circles but this image has a triangle behind it. The man grins at the screen. He asks it, “What would you like to play this time?”</p>

<p style="text-align:justify">Lain’s teacher is writing on the blackboard. Lain is accessing her HandiNAVI during class. Alice is watching Lain. Alice looks concerned as she notes what her friend is doing.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify">The sky appears to be overcast. The power lines are humming. A man is sitting in an extremely messy apartment room. Trash is all over and the sink is overfilled with dishes. The man is working on a Navi. The man laughs and says, “take this!” On his screen is the same symbol and message that was sent to the business man. The messy man laughs again. “He he. That's right, you idiots.” The man has an unkempt appearance. He is wearing glasses and a thick red headband. He gleefully mutters, “I’m better than you. Hee hee!”</p>

<p style="text-align:justify">Lain is outside on the roof of her school. She is kneeling and holding onto the railing as she peers down at the buildings around her school. She says aloud, “ The real world is not real at all.” Alice appears and speaks her name, “Lain.” Lain looks up to see her friend standing next to her. Alice continues, “Lain are you okay? “ Lain responds, “ Eh, what do you mean?” Alice answers. “You look like your old self lately.” Lain gives a nod. Alice says, “We only wanted you to cheer up, so we took you out to some places.” Lain has a sad look on her face. Alice continues, “We’d really hoped you would. But if that’s not what you wanted I apologize.” Lain hurriedly stands up and faces her friend. “No,” Lain says, “not at all. I was happy to…” Lain shakes her head no repeatedly and emphasizes, “That’s not it at all.” Alice turns to look at her. Lain seems very earnest, as if she really does not want Alice to think going out was a mistake. Alice’s smile broadens. She reaches down and gently takes Lain’s hand in between her own. Alice says, “I’m glad,” then walks away. Lain stands there momentarily looking at her hand. She quickly turns and stops Alice’s departure by saying, “Alice, thank you for worrying about me.” Alice replies, “We’re friends aren’t we? See ya.” then turns to leave. Lain watches her go. A truly happy look is on Lain’s face.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify">A computer screen is showing a variety of images of scenery and animals. A male voice states, “This afternoon, someone cracked the firewall of the Information Agency’s　Information Monitoring Center. Now the information in the Wired is disordered. Be aware that although this news was sent now, it may be received tomorrow or yesterday.”</p>

<p style="text-align:justify">A different computer screen is flashing lights and images. The word “KNIGHTS” can be seen. Muttering voices can be heard. A male voice says, “I heard it was done by Knights.” Another voice asks, “What are Knights?” The screen shows the words, “What’s Knights?” The female Navi voice answers. “Knights. They are very influential in the Wired. There is no information about the members. They are not only distributing information in the Wired but they are also developing and distributing illegal information devices.” The computer flashes a sentence in English, “Take aim? Shooting down?”. A male voice says, “I heard that Lain was　being targeted.” Another male voice asks, “Who is Lain?” The computer screen shifts to show the Infomana search engine. The keyword for the onscreen search is “Lain” The female Navi voice reports, “There is zero information about ‘Lain’” The English words “make me sad” twist across the screen. A male voice says, “I haven’t seen Lain lately.” More English words roll across the screen, “With no wings…with no things…one love” then “make me mad” then “double bind…no double minds” and last, Cmake me feel all right”. Another male voice asks, “Who’s Lain?” Someone responds, “A girl.” Incredulous voice, “A girl?” Another voice says, “She’s strong!” Male voice, “What’s strong about her?” Someone answers and their words float across the screen in English, “Metaphorize. Will. Power. The light in the eyes. Existence.”</p>

<p style="text-align:justify">A dialogue written in kanji and hiragana is also on the screen. The text reads, “Live monotony the rest of your life.” A new line appears, “God bless you.” Another line appears and reads, “Who are you?” “Have you ever seen the Lain?” The male voice questions the other speaker, “May I ask a question?” The response is, “What?” He states the question, “Are you are member of Knights?” The screen clicks off.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify">A doorbell rings at a nice apartment complex. A female voice yells, “Yes.” The door opens and a delivery man is waiting. He walks into the apartment and announces, “It’s for you.” The home owner approaches him. She has short brown hair. She says, “Oh, you need my signature.” and runs off to get her name stamp. The delivery man checks out her rear as she hurries to fetch the item. He notices a Navi system on her table. She reappears and apologizes, “Sorry to keep you waiting.” He says, “No problem.” The woman hands him her stamp, “Here you go.” The delivery man attempts a conversation with the woman. “Is that the newest Navi? It’s nice isn’t it?” he asks her. She giggles and says, “My side job let me buy it.” The delivery man says, “I can’t afford one, even though I’m working at this job.” He hands her a package. She replies, “Keep working at it.” He says, “Yes. I have to work more. I’ll teach you how to use it, if you want.” His eyes roam down her body, and seem to say, “I have a special package of my own I’d like to teach you to use.” The woman does not miss the innuendo and coyly responds, “Hmm, you’ll teach me?” The delivery man does not back down and says, “Yes. I’m confident enough in my ability.” The woman teases him, “Do you often tempt wives like this?” The delivery man runs his fingers through his hair and says, “Not at all…well maybe.” A young boy with a backpack runs past them, shouting, “I’m home.” The woman thanks the delivery man and shows him out the door. He stands outside, stunned that his seduction has failed and walks off in a huff.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify">The woman’s boy is seated in front of the television. He is playing a jet fighter video game. He asks, “Mom, may I go play at Kinya’s house?” His mother replies, “You can play a game with him over the net.” She removes a bubble wrapped item from the package. It's a PCB assembly. Her son continues, “He's going to teach me how to play it.” His mom is not listening. She stares at the PCB. It has the strange compass/pyramid shape on it. The mom says, “The Wired is the same as the real world.”</p>

<p style="text-align:justify">It is dusk. Lain is walking home from school. She is startled to see the black car is parked in front of her house. The doors open and the two men in black get out. Lain appears to be slightly shaken by their appearance. She mutters to herself, “What?” The shorter man says, “Iwakura Lain? Would you come with us?” The taller man says, “We won’t force you to come. We are only asking that you do.” The shorter man says, “We won’t harm you physically.” Lain asks, “Who are you?” The taller man removers his headgear/visor to reveal his face. Lain seems shocked. He says, “We’ll tell you when you come with us.”</p>

<p style="text-align:justify">The strange street camera man is still walking the streets. He continues to view the Wired and the real world simultaneously through his visor. He comments, “I don’t want to remain in such a place. I can do this. Look! I’m breaking the barrier between the real world and the Wired.” The word “PEEPING” pops up in a window in his visor screen. The man continues to talk into his headset. “Please. I am as skilled as any member of Knights. Please let me join you in Knights.” A window pops up and with the English word “ACCEPTED” in it. The man continues, “Applaud me. I found it myself. Your secret channel. Please let me join.” His camera lens moves around. It focuses on a blurred infra scanned image of Lain. The man asks, “Who?” The Lain image just grins.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify">The black car pulls up to an apartment building. Lain’s image is reflected in the car window. She is looking up at the building. The shorter man has also removed his headgear. He opens the door to let Lain out of the vehicle. Lain exits and follows the men into the building and up a flight of stairs. A sign on the wall reads, “Tachibana Lab- Shinbashi Office”. The taller man opens a door. Lain is reluctant to enter. The shorter man gives her a gentle push into the room. A male voice says, “Come here. I can’t make this machine be recognized by the firewall at the head office. I did all I could with the applications.” Lain looks around and sees the room is empty except for the man, the chair he is sitting on, and his Navi system, which is on the floor.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify">The equipment is rather primitive. A standard rotary phone and an older computer make up this man’s system. “It seems impossible to do with this outdated Navi”, he says. “I’ve been using this for a long time so I don’t want to have to get a new Navi.” Lain walks towards the man. She has yet to see his face as he has kept his back to her. He turns toward Lain and says, “I’m so old.” He does not look all that old. No sign of gray in his hair and relatively few lines on his face. He laments, “If I were young like you…” Lain looks from the man to his system and says, “That jumper…” She kneels down by the Navi and points out, “Pull this…and that jumper off.” The man points and says, “I’m sorry, but would you do it?” Lain turns back and looks at him. The two men in black are standing guard at the door. Lain uses a set of tweezers supplied by the man to make the alterations to his Navi. She completes her task and turns on his Navi. The female Navi voice says, “Authorized.” Lain’s name appears as the user identification. The man leans down to the Navi and says, "huh."</p>

<p style="text-align:justify">A male voice emits from the Navi, “Lain! Are you a member of the Knights?” Lain sits up and is clearly shocked. The voice continues, “You are, aren’t you Lain? I didn’t know that you are.” On the screen is an image of Lain. It is similar to the image seen by the strange HMD man. The screen Lain calls the male voice an idiot.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify">The scene shifts and we are seeing the world through street camera man’s eyes again. He pleads, “Wait! Wait! It was so much fun what you did with the kids.” But I have better ideas. Please let me join you in Knights.” A window appears in his visor, again with the word, “PEEPING”. Lain is watching the street camera man on the outdated Navi with the mystery man. He tells Lain, “There are no national barriers in the Wired.” He pushes a button to turn off the screen. He continues, “There are many anarchists who are talking nonsense.” Lain stands up. The man is sill talking, “And there are too many fools who believe that causing mischief in a society is a revolution. But Knights seem different from them.” Lain repeats, “Knights…” The man replies, “I don’t know if you were aware of it, but your existence in the Wired is very unnatural. And Knights seemed to have a special interest in you.” Lain has started to perspire. She asks, “what are you saying?” She is trembling with fear. The man says, “Knights. You have talked directly to them.”. Lain stammers, “But I um…what?” The man closes his eyes and says, “Anyway, they want to use you for something. We have to stop it. No matter what.” Lain asks him, “You…what…? Who are you guys?” He does not respond.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify">It is nighttime and augmented reality man is still lurking about. He says, “I’ll keep the secret of course. I know you believe in Deus. I’ll obey you too.” Augmented reality man heads for a flight of stairs. He says, “But is it true? I can’t believe that there’s a God in the Wired now. But I’ll know more about it when I join. I’ll believe in him.” His camera zooms in on the image of three people standing in front of him. They appear to be the blurred images of the businessman, the housewife/mother, and the messy red headband guy. Street camera man says to them, “ You guys? You’ve come to meet me?” Then his camera blinks out.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify">Lain and the man are still in the empty room. “My name?” he says. “My name is of no value to you. They have no names”, he refers to the men in black. “Nor do I.” Lain walked away from him and towards the men in black who are standing by the door. The man asks, “Tell me, Iwakura Lain. Are you the same person as ‘Lain in the Wired’?” Lain just stands there sweating and trembling. He repeats, “Who are you?. Lain stammers, “I…I…” He fires another question at her, “Are your parents really your parents?. Lain spins around to face him. “What?”, she asks. His barrage continues. “Is your sister really your sister?” Lain is stunned. “What are you saying. Of course they…” He shows no mercy. “When is your father’s birthday? Lain is sweating profusely. She says, “My dad is…” He does not let her finish. Instead he stands for the first time and asks, “When is your mother’s birthday? When did your parents marry? Did they marry for love? Or was it an arranged marriage.” Lain is almost hyperventilating as she gasps, “They are…” Cruelly he declares, “Why don’t you know? Have you never heard? Have you never celebrated their birthdays with your family?” Lain collapses to her knees, sobbing. He asks more gently, “When and where were you born?” Lain is still sweating and crying. She pleads for him to stop. The man states, “You don’t know anything about yourself. Are you all right? You really know absolutely nothing…”</p>

<p style="text-align:justify">Lain staggers to her feet. She steadies herself and snorts, “Annoying jerk. You ask about trivial matters. Nonsense.” She is strangely calm and decidedly different than the Lain who was crying. All three of the men notice the tremendous change in her personality. It is almost as if she is another person. The main man asks, “Are you ‘Lain in the Wired’?” ‘Lain’ responds, “So what if I am.” The man continues. “You know the border between the Wired and the real world began to break without devices.” ‘Lain’ says, “So What.” The man replies, “We think it is dangerous.” ‘Lain’ has an arrogant look on her face as she retorts, “It’s interesting.” She then turns to leave. ‘Lain’ commands the two men in black to let her pass. She pushes on through them when they don’t respond. The taller man grabs her arm and pulls her back. He tells her, “You are also dangerous.” ‘Lain’ glares up at him. The main man addressed the taller man by his name, “Carl”. Carl let’s ‘Lain’s’ arm go and she struts out of the room.. The main man tells Carl and the shorter man , "She’s right. Something interesting is beginning. Let us sit back and observe.”</p>

<p style="text-align:justify">The scene shifts back to the housewife’s home. Her son is still playing the jet fighter video game. The moms sing songs his name, “Sho-chan.”. He answers, “What’s up mom?” She replies, “Let’s play together!” Sho says, “Did you finish your business?” She replies, “Of course. I’m awesome. I’ll beat you Sho chan!” She then flops down on the floor beside him and grabs a controller. She squeals, “Get ready for it! See?” In the kitchen we see her garbage can. At the top of the trash is a burnt object. It is the remains of the PCB assembly that was delivered to her.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify">Cars are zooming on a busy street. It is nighttime. There is a ravine off the shoulder of the road. A body lies still at the bottom. It is the augmented reality man. He is dead but his visor is still operating. The symbol of the compass/pyramid can be seen on the screen of the dead man's Navi screen.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify">( Source )</p>

Trivia
* During class, Lain programs on her HandiNAVI in the multi-paradigm programming language Lisp. This is likely related to the Knights of the Lambda Calculus, because in real life they were a community surrounding the Lisp language.
* Nezumi's perspective is viewed through Apple's HotSauce interface, which was created to give users a novel Internet experience. The program code shown in one scene seems to be a perl script for generating a web page, also known as CGI Script
Taro (タロウ Tarō) is a boy, aged 11, who frequents Cyberia. Although not a formal member, he often works with the Knights of the Eastern Calculus. He is a PK in PHANTOMa.

Biography
Little of Taro's life before the start of the series is known.

At the age of around ten, Taro began to frequent the Cyberia nightclub; it is assumed that it is here he met his girlfriend Myu-myu and best friend Masayuki. He met Iwakura Lain upon her asking him about the Psyche processor, but knew her previously in the Wired; he asks her out, and subsequently dates her. In her room, Lain uses psychological warfare(Track 44) in order to extract the fact that he is in contact with the Knights. After the Reset, Taro is seen playing with Masayuki, Myu-myu, the Cyberia suicide and a female victim of PHANTOMa; he does not recognize Lain.

Pre-Reset Taro shows some signs of obsession with Lain, having watched her "always" in the Wired, and calling her an "angel" when breaking the news of their date to Masayuki and Myu-myu.

Personality and private life
Taro is very fickle with girls; despite being Myu-myu's boyfriend, he asks out both Lain and Iwakura Mika in the same short time. However, the only girl that he is known to have kissed is Lain.
Lain and her friends, Alice, Juri, and Reika, often go there to hang out and shop, and sometimes to visit Cyberia. Mika also visits Shibuya to spend time with her boyfriend.
Almost all of these images are recognizable as views from the famous scramble crossing by Shibuya Station, though many of the businesses' names are slightly altered. The views include landmarks such as the Center Gai entrance, the statue of Hachiko, 109, Men's 109, and the entrance to Shibuya Station. Later in the episode, Lain's face is displayed on the large screen mounted on the front of the Men's 109 building.

*Center Gai
A narrow shopping street, one of the streets that radiates out from the scramble crossing's intersection. According to Konaka's script of Layer 01, the building Chisa jumped off of was on this street.

*Shibuya Police Station
Layer 03 begins with a blurred photograph of Shibuya Police Station, where Lain is taken for statements after the shooting at the end of Layer 02. The station is located to the east of the train station, in a 15-storey building. In Google maps, the portion of the building in the photograph is obscured by a flight of stairs leading to pedestrian overpasses.

*Yamanote Line
This train line runs through Shibuya, making a stop at Shibuya Station. According to information provided in Layer 09, Masami Eiri killed himself on this line between Harajuku and Yoyogi, two other stations located in Shibuya.

Long summary
Leaving Cyberia
<p style="text-align:justify">In front of Cyberia, police have arrived. 「LAINって子…聞いた事彼でしょう」(English: "This Lain kid, you've heard the word, innit?") Lain and Alice emerge. 「WIREDの…LAIN」(English: "In the WIRED, Lain")</p>

<p style="text-align:justify">[Psyche - Layer:03]</p>

Police Station
<p style="text-align:justify">Red laser beam. Blood puddle oozing. (Flashbacks.) Lain being questioned by a policeman at the station. The police comment that they have been unable to reach Lain's parents by telephone. Lain is confused about this. The police are concerned because they cannot reach anyone by telephone at Lain's house. As the interrogation continues Alice watches from an outer room.</p>
Alice
<p style="text-align:justify">She enters and apologizes to Lain. She grabs her hands and tells her it was her fault. Lain, confused, has trouble even speaking Alice's name, when she does, she sounds practically robotic. Alice is called by her mother to leave. The policeman tells Lain that she can go home.</p>
Empty Home
<p style="text-align:justify">As the police car carrying Lain pulls up to her house it is dark while many neighbors are lit. Lain notices the foyer empt. Her parents' bedroom is neat like it hasn't been used yet tonight. (Perhaps they're on a date.) Lain enters her bedroom, the glow of her computer monitor inviting. She sits down in front of her computer. She stares into the monitor. Cut. Lain is waking up at her computer. (It is not made clear whether she was using it, or whether she's aware of using it.) It's still night. She gets up and checks the house again. When she looks into her parents' bedroom again, a slight relieved expression seems to come to her face. (Maybe her parents have returned from their date or something.) She returns to her Navi and checks messages. No messages to Lain. Lain says "Good Night, Navi" and the Navi responds "Good Night, Lain." Lain seems to react to this. (Perhaps in Lain's mind this lends animacy to her Navi.) Lain falls asleep in her bearsuit.</p>
Late Morning
<p style="text-align:justify">Lain overslept. Her mother is in the kitchen washing dishes. A hearty breakfast on the table. She issues a wan admonishon to Lain about being late. Lain starts to ask about last night, but doesn't finish.
Walking to school
Walking to school, Lain notices a black sedan. A red dot appears from within. Lain's face seems to expresse surprise and fear. As Lain continues, the red dot moves in the same direction that Lain is going. Lain is taken aback and starts running.
Train (of thought)
On the train to school Lain hears a voice (hallucination) repeating ``Lain in beat with the oscilation of the passing wires. It says "Do you understand". Lain asks the disembodied voice "Who are you." The voice says "You are not alone." Lain gasps and stares out the window at the passing wires.</p>
School
<p style="text-align:justify">The girls are giggling about last night's murder `suicide.' July asks across the room whether Lain got in trouble last night. Reika reminds "It wasn't our fault." Alice looks towards Lain but is bombarded with questions about the gory details. They ask her to tell her about it and Lain flashes a smile and nod (happy that they got her to go out?) that Alice seems to reässure to Alice that Lain is alright.
Class concept
During class Lain is abstracted, doodling something spiralish. A voice is heard discussing the PSYCHE (it sounds like reading a news article aloud---another hallucination? or conscious imagination?)</p>
Tisa Interrupts
<p style="text-align:justify">Lain starts seeing a swrily tunnel under her doodle-swirl. The PSYCHE narration is interrupted by Tisa (or someone else of similar circumstance) talking about her suicide. Lain becomes distressed about this, looks at the classroon door where a Tisa-like person is standing, looking in to the classroom. As Tisa continues discussing her suicide, Lain's distress grows and she places her hands over her ears, squeezing but the voice doesn't stop. A distorted voice keeps asking "Who is Lain?"</p>
Love Letter
<p style="text-align:justify">Alice expresses concern about their lighthearted reactions to the murder `suicide,' to which Reika responds that it didn't feel real but like a movie or a TV show. July agrees and tells Alice not to take it too seriously. Meanwhile, Lain opens her locker and sees a small brown envelope on her shoes. Alice responds that she thinks its strange that they can't take it more seriously. She turns and says "Right Lain?" and then notices the letter in Lain's hand. Alice asks if is a love letter. Lain says "No, but maybe." Juri and Reika descend on her saying "Show me, show me." Reika takes the envelope from Lain and says "You shouldn't hide things like this from us." Alice chimes in "Stop it you're picking on her again." Reika opens the envelope and a small brown looking square comes out. No one seems to know what it is, including Lain.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify">Lain is walking home to the familiar electrical hum. She removes the small object from her pocket and looks at it. Suddenly she says "Psyche" and she just stands there and stares.</p>

[Lainwashed Pseudofan here: I think there's supposed to be an ad-break here. It's roughly the middle of the episode, and the following scene is quite different from the preceeding. In a certain sense, it seems that this is when the episode really begins, with what was before being a continuation of Layer:02. Thoughts?]

<p style="text-align:justify">The scene changes to a PSYCHEdelic view of wires in the night. Several disembodied conversations are overheard, as if they are traversing over the wires we see. Female voice: "No, my voice mail was tapped! I can't believe it." Male voice: "There's no relevant information in the resume received. We're examining it for your company." Female voice: "I love kissing. Even by myself it makes me happy." Male voce: "After that silly incident with the kid and Accela the supplier got scared and now we can't hardly get any of them." Another male voice: "Psyche appears to be made in Taiwan and there is a rumor that it was designed by a group called Knights. But I'm not sure if the Knights really exist." Female voice: "Did you feel good while dying?" And now we see Lain sitting at her Navi. Male voice: "Yes. I felt like hugging myself with joy." Female voice: "No! There is someone in my room! A small child-like but wrinkled man is looking at me." The voice is crying. "Help me!" Lain watches on into a typical Navi screen. A different female voice says "I have a photograph taken when you were with your secret lover. If I take this to your company…" Lain turns away from the Navi screen and looks at the small device. We hear "Lain, why aren't you here yet?"</p>

<p style="text-align:justify">As she grips the device in her hand the Navi announces: "You have mail." Lain's father interrupts before she can read it. He asks if she has started using her new Navi, and then turns on the lights in her room. He asks if there is something wrong. Lain shows him he device she received. He says he does not know what it is. She implores "But Dad, I believe that you do." He says "I told you I don't know" and leaves.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify">It is later and we see Lain leaving her house. She sees the black car with the small red lights watching her again. Lain runs away. We see Lain in the city approaching the Cyberia Café. Lain tentatively enters the club. A man stops her and says "Lain, you haven't been here for a while." Lain looks at him. The man is surprised and says "You look too girlish today." He leaves to go back to his partying. Lain looks at a table in the corner where Taro, Myu-Myu, and Masayuki are seated. They are the three Lain ran into in the stairway the night before. Taro and Masayuki are teasing one another. Lain interrupts asking "Do you know what this is" showing them the device. Taro asks "isn't that the Psyche". Masayuki and Myu-Myu can't believe it. Masayuki asks "where did you buy it", but Lain just asks again what it is. Taro is shocked and says "With that you can gain access to the Wired perfectly, even with this" indicating his hand-held computer. Lain asks "How do I use this?" Myu-Myu cattily says: "How stupid!" Masayuki asks Lain if she will sell it. Taro retorts: "Idiot, you could never buy it." Taro then turns to Lain and asks "What is your Navi?" Lain isn't sure, but thinks it is the latest Tachibana model. The group is impressed.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify">Taro asks if she has worked on the inside of it and Lain nods her head "No." Masayuki asks if she's in second or third year of Junior High. Lain replies "Second." Masayuki points out that she should have studied information basics and tells her that the Navi layout is in her textbook. As Taro stares at Lain, Masayuki gives detailed instructions: "Connect this on the backside of the main processor board. It will re-rout the original information back to the processor and it will work automatically. Its easier than building a plastic model kit. Just be aware of static electricity." Lain smiles and thanks the boy. Now we hear Taro calling to Lain: "Wait a minute. Information is not free both in the Wired and the real world." Masayuki asks "How much, How much?" Taro continues: "Aren't you Lain?" Lain turns, surprised. Taro says "I saw you in the Wired once." Lain asks: "Me? In the Wired?" Taro responds: "But you look quite different. Its common to assume a different character in the Wired, but yours is quite the opposite." Myu-Myu says "Really?" Taro continues: "You were here when that stupid incident happened, weren't you." Then he asks: "What are you up to?" Lain responds "What can I do?" Taro says "Go out on a date with me." Taro says that he would rather go out with the wild Lain, though, instead of the current one. Lain turns angrily to him, but then Taro says "I'm just kidding! When ever you like." Myu-Myu jealously asks "What are you talking about?" But Taro says to never mind and beckons the group to leave.
<p style="text-align:justify">Outside, the next day, we see Lain's sister coming home from school. As she passes the black car, the red lights do not follow her. Mika sees two men standing on the doorstep. She asks what them men are doing there. "Who are you?" One man just responds "You didn't meet us." [Shades says "The Jedi Mind Trick!"] Mika says "What are you talking about? I'll call the police. [Shades: "Damn! The Jedi Mind Trick didn't work!!"] The other man asks "What for, we were never here," and they walk away. Mika is angry and tells her mom to call the police if the men come again. Mika heads upstairs and stops at Lain's open door. She looks in and asks what she's doing. Lain is seated on the floor in her underwear surrounded by pieces of her Navi. Mika asks again "What are you doing… dressed like that?" Lain tells here she has to avoid static electricity. Mika thinks that's silly. Suddenly the scene becomes static-like. A strangely happy Lain sits up in strobed action and says "Welcome Home, Sister!"</p>
Despera (ですぺら, Desupera) is a planned anime series, written by Chiaki J. Konaka and featuring character designs by Yoshitoshi ABe, which was to be directed by Ryūtarō Nakamura before his passing.

This would have been the second time the three main creators of psychological thriller anime Serial Experiments Lain would have worked together on the same project, and it would have been Nakamura and Konaka's third collaboration after their work on Ghost Hound. The title Despera is taken from a poem of the same title by Japanese Dadaist poet Jun Tsuji. Though the title of Tsuji's poem comes from the word "despair" or "desperation", the official blog for the anime stated that it can also imply the Spanish word desperado. A graphic novel serialization related to the anime was published in the Japanese magazine Animage from July 2009 to July 2010.

On June 29, 2013, director Ryūtarō Nakamura died due to pancreatic cancer. At Overload 2014, Yoshitoshi ABe announced that a new director had been found to continue working on Despera. In 2018, Yoshitoshi ABe and Chiaki J. Konaka said the reason Despera is in development hell is not primarily due to a lack of funds, but because of the current state of the anime industry. On March 23, 2021, Chiaki J. Konaka said that the anime was 80% funded and that the core staff had done a considerable amount of work done on it already.

Story
The story centers around a 14-year-old girl named Ain, who often builds devices despite the lack of scientific background for them. This alternate history science fiction story is set in Tokyo during the Taishō era in 1922, one year before the 1923 Great Kantō earthquake.
Production
During Sakura-Con 2009, famed character designer Yoshitoshi ABe revealed that he will be developing a new anime titled Desperant (デスペラント). He also announced that he will be working with many of the staff who worked on Serial Experiments Lain. Details on the storyline were scarce as ABe stated that the anime had not been officially unveiled in Japan yet, but he revealed that it will be set during Japan's Taishō era. On his personal blog the next day, ABe clarified that the title of the anime is Despera and that he mispronounced it during the announcement at Sakura-Con. On his website, Chiaki J. Konaka announced a graphic novel serialization in the Japanese magazine Animage which lasted for a year, with the story penned by him and artwork provided by ABe.

Production of the anime was placed on hold due to director Ryūtarō Nakamura's health issues. On June 29, 2013, Nakamura passed away of pancreatic cancer, and it was unknown whether development of Despera would continue following his death. At Overload 2014, ABe announced that the anime would move forward with a new director. In 2018, Yoshitoshi ABe and Chiaki J. Konaka said the reason Despera is in development hell is not primarily due to a lack of funds, but because of the current state of the anime industry.

On March 23, 2021, writer Chiaki J. Konaka said that the anime of Despera was 80% funded and that the core staff had done a considerable amount of work on it. Production was halted in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but by the time of the tweet, the team had resumed development. He also mentioned that there won't be an announcement in 2021, and stated that Yoshitoshi ABe and him had been working on Despera for over 18 years.
Japanese only; interview included in the 2010 reissue of Scenario Experiments Lain<br>
Note: maybe this should be translated as "lain turns 12"? i don't know, it's literally "lain of the twelfth year"
Note: This was an event held at Cine Libre Ikebukuro in Tokyo to promote the release of the Bluray Box|RESTORE. It seems like most of the people on stage were random animators who had nothing to do with the production of Lain, unless I'm just bad at finding credits. And one of them was named Burger! But my best guess is that they were the people involved in the restoration process.
