Karl Haushofer and Lin Sui-Xi work for the above "[[Boss]]" in tracking down and assassinating most of the [[Knights of the Eastern Calculus]]. They are not told the true plan, but they know that [[Eiri Masami]] is involved. They say that they "don't need a Wired God".

The Men in Black make their first appearance in [[Layer 02]] in which Karl conspicuously watches Lain from behind a lamp post, notably without his eyepiece. They re-appear in [[Layer 03]] in front of the Iwakura residence just as [[Iwakura Mika]] has returned, much to her confusion and anger. In response to Mika's threat that she would call the police, Karl and Lin tell her that she had never seen them, nor had they ever been there.

In [[Layer 04]] the Men in Black show up once again at the Iwakura residence, this time at the climax of Lain's fevered activity on the [[Wired]]. Angered by their intrusion, Lain yells at them to "go away" and causes Lin's eyepiece to malfunction, wounding him as well. This causes both of the agents to flee.

They are noticeably absent from [[Layer 05]], returning in [[Layer 06]] to confront Lain in person. She accuses them of being part of the [[Knights of the Eastern Calculus|Knights]], but Karl simply tells her to "get down". Seconds later her coolant system explodes, shattering her window. Lain accuses the Men in Black of the act but Karl tells her that [[Knights of the Eastern Calculus|they]] planted a parasite bomb in her coolant system. Lain is still not convinced that the Men in Black are innocent, and Karl states again that it was the work of the Knights. The Men in Black depart, leaving Lain speechless and shocked.

In the next layer they intercept Lain as she returns from class. They request that she come with them, and promises that they do not intend to harm her. They escort her to the [[Boss]], witnessing Lain's shift in identity in the process when she is mercilessly questioned. As the more [[Identity|assertive Lain persona]] excuses herself, Karl tells her that she "is what is dangerous". The boss tells the Men in Black that something interesting is taking place, and that the three of them should observe the events to come.

The Men in Black do not resurface until [[Layer 10]], in which the identity of the Knights are released worldwide by Lain. The pair assassinate [[Takuyoshi Masuoka]], injecting a lethal substance into his neck. Subsequently, a mass [[Suicide in Serial Experiments Lain|suicide]] of the Knights takes place.

In [[Layer 12]], Karl suspects that they have been betrayed by their employer due to his contact with Masami Eiri. He also believes that Eiri still lives despite his supposed suicide, to the bewilderment of his partner. Moments later, they are approached by their Boss, who confirms Karl's suspicions. Karl recounts that they had been told to escape -- the boss says smugly that it should be somewhere "...where there is no electric wires and no electromagnetic waves from satellites.” Lin responds with outrage, saying that there is no such place on earth. Karl asks his erstwhile client what will happen when the real world merges with the Wired without devices. The boss simply replies that something "wonderful" will happen, and that he is looking forward to it. When he leaves, Lin is suddenly stricken with inexplicable pain and begins screaming in fear. He then collapses and begins convulsing, his body contorting wildly. Karl rushes to his aid, shocked to find an image of Lain in Lin's retina. He then realizes that his partner is dead. Moments later Karl is stricken by a similar terror and anxiously scans his surroundings before being confronted by a shadowy image. Karl lets out a similar horrified scream as the visage closes in, perhaps meeting the fate of his partner.

Knights of the Eastern Calculus

The '''Knights of the Eastern Calculus''' (often the '''Knights''') is a group of pseudonymous, notorious and highly-skilled computer crackers.

They interact with [[Lain]] in various ways, possibly trying to trick her into entering The Wired or join them. They use [[Taro]] to get to her. In some way, they are responsible for the use and distribution of the [[psyche]] chip, which somehow massively improves network performance despite being a CPU.

One of them is very fat, and says "I'm better than all you bozos!", referring to the law-abiding computer security experts who try to shut the Knights down.

The Knights are assassinated by the [[Men in Black]], or commit [[Suicide in Serial Experiments Lain|suicide]], after [[Iwakura Lain]] leaks their membership list onto [[The Wired]].

Their name is a reference to the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knights_of_the_Lambda_Calculus Knights of the Lambda Calculus], a semi-fictional group of Scheme enthusiasts at MIT. Lambda calculus itself is a formalisation of computation - one of the most fundamental and powerful ideas behind the concept of a computer.

A close up view of Lain's eye. "The one truth…God," she says to herself. She is facing the visage of Masami Eiri. He is the self proclaimed God in the Wired, Deus. He says, "Yes it is me Lain." Lain just looks at him.

Flashback to the Yamanote Line rail track 13. This is where Masami Eiri was killed by a train.

Lain asks Masami, "Are you God?" He replies, "Yes, I'm God." He verbalizes the questions flooding her mind, "How can you be a God? I don't understand. Aren't you already dead as a human? You can't be a God." Lain replies, "I understand that the flesh is not necessary. Death is only a means to abandon the flesh." Masami seems surprised that she is so matter of fact about the subject. He says, "This is about Chisa."

Flashback to Chisa's death. The floating text words appear, "I… don't need to be here."

Lain confirms his statement, "It is… yes…. But I improved the Protocol that rules the Wired." Masami smiles, "Yes, you did. But the Protocol is only an agreement." Lain agrees, "Yes. But I programmed a code that will function in a higher phase." Masami rebukes her, "So what?" Lain looks up at him and says, "I programmed some compressed information into the Protocol as a code." Masami asks, "What kind of information?" Lain replies, "A human's memory…. All the thoughts, problems, memories, and emotions of myself," then she lets him know she is aware of his true identity, "Masami Eiri." Masami asks, "What does it mean?" Lain says, "I can live forever in the Wired as an anonymous existence, and rule there by information."

"What should you be called," Masami asks of her. Lain replies, "God." Masami cautions, "There is no God." Lain is unfazed by his remark, "Even if I could be a common existence in the Wired and affect it, I can't be a God without believers." Masami says, "But there are. No, you created them." Lain replies, "Knights." Masami and Lain stare at each other. Masami ends the stare down and disappears. He does not leave without a few parting words, "You don't need your flesh Lain." Lain gets an angry look on her face. "No. You're lying," she emphatically declares. Thus concludes their first "in person" meeting.

Lain walks into her classroom. Her classmates are giggling and talking amongst themselves. Lain watches as Alice and Reika hang out with Juri at Juri's desk. The three girls seem to be deeply engrossed in their conversation. Lain walks to the front row towards her desk. She becomes alarmed as she realizes her desk is missing. She stands dumbfounded in the space it once occupied. The teacher walks in and the class representative commands the class, " Stand up! Bow!" Lain remains motionless. The teacher instructs her class, "Now put away your textbooks." (Ahhh….Pop quiz!!…@#%#!!Thank God those days are looonnggg goonnee- Shades ^ /^;) The teacher starts to hand out a test. When she gets to Lain's row, she hands the test right past Lain, as though she cannot see her. Lain's hands are set in a position indicating she is ready to receive the test. She is stunned that the teacher is unaware of her presence. Lain looks down at her empty hands and says, "I…I'm real…. I'm alive….I'm here…. Why have things come to this? Did I do something wrong? I've always tried not to do so. I've always tried not to say something wrong…. Is it true? I really might not have flesh?" Lain turns to look for Alice, her protector, her friend. Alice says, "You're right Lain. You are no longer needed in the real World." Lain's eyes widen. Alice is quietly completing her quiz. She has said nothing in reality. Lain looks as if her life is spinning out of control. Her classmates continue to take their exam, unaware of her.

Lain is walking home. Her shadow seems to be full of energy. Lain's house is very dark. She enters and announces, "I'm home." No one responds. Lain begins to check each room. They are all devoid of any human presence. Her parents room is unoccupied, its beds stripped. It almost seems as though the house was quickly abandoned. The refrigerator door was left open. Plants have died on the window sill from lack of care. Mika's room is messy and minus Mika. Clothes and personal effects are strewn on the floor.

Lain has a flashback of Mika. Mika is saying, "Pee pee. Gaaa…." Lain bends down and starts to collect her sister's belongings. She hears a noise from behind her. Lain turns and sees her dad is standing in the doorway. She puts the items down and stands up to greet him, "Papa?" Her dad says, "It is now time for us to say goodbye, Lain." Lain looks puzzled. He continues, "Didn't you notice? Our job is over. Although it was a short time, I couldn't do enough for you. Now you are free. You can do whatever you wish." Lain continues to stand and look at her father with a blank look on her face. Lain's dad says, "No, you have been free since the beginning. Although I was not allowed to tell you goodbye, I loved you." Lain is still motionless and speechless. Her dad adds, "I didn't enjoy pretending to be a family. But I think that I did envy you. Bye." He turns and leaves the room. Lain stares at the spot he vacated. She collects herself and yells, "Wait," then runs after him. He is walking down the stairs when he hears her. Lain yells down to him, "Don't leave me alone!" Without turning to look at her he replies, "Alone? You are not alone." Lain gasps. Her dad continues, "When you connect to the Wired, you will always be welcomed. That is the reason you were born." He continues his exit from the household they shared. Lain stands confused and afraid at the top of the stairs. Her family, if that's who they really were, is gone.

A scene of the city. A light mist rolls across the streets. Lain says, "I am not alone." Digital Lain is in the Wired. Shadowy figures walk by her. Energy passes through the circuit wires. A female voice asks her, "Do you want to do something Lain? This is your world, Lain." Digital Lain looks up and asks, "Who are the Knights? They may have created a false me." A male voice answers, "I don't agree." Another male voice interjects, "It's possible. It seems that the Knights of Eastern Calculus originated with the temple Knights. They have used 'the group of the unconscious' before the appearance of the Wired. 'The group of the unconscious' is an invisible network between humans." The female voice asks, "What do you want to know Lain?" Digital Lain now seems to be standing in the cityscape with the light mist. Her question is, "Knights…. Who are the Knights?" The female voice replies, "Do you want to know, Lain?" Digital Lain says, "God in the Wired can be God because there are believers of God." Everything fades to black around Digital Lain. She gasps in surprise as huge amounts of energy seem to blast through the Wired.

An outside view of the Cyberia Café and Club. The club is empty save for Taro, Masayuki, and Myu Myu. Masayuki says, "Taro, shall we go to another place? Don't you feel bored?" Taro is preoccupied with his pocket Navi. Myu Myu agrees, "How about going to my house?" Myu Myu looks at Masayuki and says, "Masayuki, you don't need to come." Masayuki is clueless, "What are you saying?" Myu Myu answers, "Taro will not keep you company. You are still a child." Masayuki grimaces and says, "What are you saying? You're also a child, Myu Myu." Taro is still staring at his Navi, oblivious to their conversation. The screen displays the words, "Knights of the Eastern Calculus." Images of the Knights and their names appear under the banner. The image of [[Takuyoshi Masuoka]], and [[Masatsugu Shoko]] appear, along with their names. Taro's eyes widen. He is concerned with the implications of this information. Myu Myu says, "I'm a girl. Younger is always better for girls. Right, Taro?" ( I hope she's not talking about what I think she's talking about. That would be…wrong- Shades) Taro ignores the both of them and continues to watch as the secret membership of the Knights became public knowledge. Masayuki asks him, "What does the Net News say?" Taro can only respond with, "List." Myu Myu asks, "What list?" She and Masayuki try to peer over Taro's shoulder. Taro says, "Why is there a list of the members of Knights on the Net News?" Myu Myu and Masayuki look at each other with puzzled looks on their faces. They don't grasp the gravity of the situation and resume peeking over Taro's shoulder.

The businessman's name is [[Takuyoshi Masuoka]]. He is in his office and is horrified to see his name and image posted on the Net News. He rolls his chair away from his Navi. He begins to shove papers and disks into a briefcase. Panic spreads across his features. There is a knock on his door. "Y..yes…" he asks? In walk the men in black, Carl and the shorter guy. They stop in front of Takuyoshi's desk. The shorter man says, "Don't say a thing." Takuyoshi backs away from them. His back is pressed to a huge window, which overlooks the city. Carl moves closer and says, "Take your responsibility." Carl them muffles Takuyoshi's mouth with one hand and injects a liquid into the stunned man's neck with his other hand. Takuyoshi falls to the floor. A lightning bolt punctuates the moment.

The secretary of Takuyoshi Masuoka softly knocks on her boss's door. He does not respond. She opens the door and gasps as she sees her boss slumped over in his chair with his head on his desk, dead.

The scene shifts to the apartment of red headband man. He is laying spread-eagled on his bed, dead. A small reading lamp is pointed down at his mouth. The light illuminates the fact that his mouth will remain frozen open in silent protest.

The scene shifts to the home of [[Masatsugu Shoko]]. The jet fighter game is once again being played by her son, Syo. Syo informs his mom, "Mom, I lost." So engrossed in his game is he that Syo does not notice his mother is slumped at the kitchen table, her Navi before her. Syo says, "Earth to mom." An overheard view of her at the table confirms she is not only slumped at the table, but that she is dead. A pool of what appears to be blood, seeps from her head. Syo continues to talk with her, "It's your turn. If you won't play I'll continue it." Her Navi is still on. The last name Graver scrolls on the screen. It is followed by the name Janet Ginger. Syo says, "Mom, I'll beat you."

A news reporter announces, "Many people killed themselves all over the world today. The information agency and the police in each country started to investigate the cases." The screen shows the lifeless forms of some of the deceased. "All of them were concerned with network service. Informed sources says that they were members of a group called 'Knights'." The screen shows the symbol of the Knights. The news is turned off.

Lain is sitting in front of her Navi. Her eyes are half shut. (I could have said half open, so I guess that makes me a 'the glass is half empty' kind of girl- Shades) Some type of instrument is clipped to her lower lip. A cord is wrapped all around her body. Her multiple Navi screens flash with different messages behind her. Lain looks exhausted. Two pairs of feet are going upstairs to Lain's room. It is the men in black, Carl and the shorter guy. They open the door to her room. Carl enters first. The shorter man chuckles. Lain asks them, "Why did you do it?" Carl answers, "It was a request from our client. You found out the members of Knights all over the world. Now we are killing them all over the world." Lain says, "But that's…" She is interrupted by Carl. He continues, "The Wired must not be a special world. It must only help the real world." Lain says, "But…" Now she is interrupted by the shorter man, "You also must not exist in the Wired. But you are still alive." He chuckles before finishing his thought, "You may have the protection of God," and chuckles again. Carl says, "Soon, the remaining ghost of Masami Eiri in the Wired will be disinfected. Our client is now working to rewrite all of Protocol 7." Lain does not reply so Carl says, "We don't need God." The shorter man adds, "In the Wired or in the real World." He chuckles and leaves the room. Carl stares at Lain. He removes his visor and says, "We still can't even understand what you are." Lain remains unresponsive. Carl adds, "But I love you. Love is a strange emotion, isn't it?" Carl leaves the room. He walks past his still chuckling partner. Lain closes her eyes.

Digital Lain is in the Wired. Her image has returned to the location where she first met Masami Eiri. Digital Lain asks, "What will you do?" Masami Eiri appears. He repeats the question, "Well, what shall I do?" Digital Lain says, "You have no believers left." Wind whips by both Digital Lain and Masami. He says, "If so, I can't remain God. But there's one believer left. If there is one believer I'm still God." Digital Lain asks, "Who?" Masami chides her, "Don't say that! It's you Lain." When she does not respond he continues, "You can be you, because of me. You were born in the Wired. You were a legend in the Wired and a fairy tale heroine in the Wired." Digital Lain says, "A lie." Masami responds, "Iwakura Lain in the real World is only a hologram of it. You are a homologous by artificial ribosome. You have never had a true body." At this, Digital Lain turns her head to look at Masami. She again says, "A lie."

Scene shift to another part of the city. Masami says, "False family, false friends…everything was false." Digital Lain says, "A lie" and her eyes brim up with tears. Then she yells, "No, that's not true!" Masami is holding Digital Lain's hair. He says, "I pity you, Lain. You are completely alone now. But I am with you. I love you. You'll love me, the one who sent you to this world." Tears freely fall from Digital Lain's eyes. Masami says, "I am your creator." He nuzzles his face into her hair then says, "Love me…please, Lain."

Digital Lain says, "Another." Masami looks a little worried and asks, "What?" Digital Lain pulls away from him and says, "Another me." Masami says, "Not another you. It's the real you." He puts his hand on Digital Lain's shoulder. She quickly shrugs it off and turns to look at him. She angrily says, "It doesn't matter which it is!" Her words seem to ripple with power. Masami is literally almost blown away by them. He chuckles. Power lines snap around Digital Lain and fall to her feet. She is left standing alone.

Flashback to the Yamanote Line rail track 13. This is where Masami Eiri was killed by a train.

Lain asks Masami, "Are you God?" He replies, "Yes, I'm God." He verbalizes the questions flooding her mind, "How can you be a God? I don't understand. Aren't you already dead as a human? You can't be a God." Lain replies, "I understand that the flesh is not necessary. Death is only a means to abandon the flesh." Masami seems surprised that she is so matter of fact about the subject. He says, "This is about Chisa."

Suicide in Serial Experiments Lain

Suicide is a common occurrence in [[Lain]]'s world. The first suicide the viewer sees is the death of [[Yomoda Chisa]] by jumping from a building at the very beginning of [[Layer 01]]. The most common reason for doing so is to "abandon the flesh" and pursue an existence on the [[Wired]] alone.

After the members of the [[Knights of the Eastern Calculus]] are exposed in [[Layer 10]], they either commit suicide or are assassinated by the [[Men in Black]].

[[Masami Eiri]] appears to have committed suicide by jumping in front of a train in order to become [[God]] in the Wired.

It is debatable whether Lain herself can be considered to have committed suicide at the end of the [[anime]]. She erases her own existence, including her past, in order to fix all the damage she has dealt to the world, but she still clearly exists in the Wired and, at one point, manifests in front of a grown-up [[Alice]].

In the [[game]], Lain commits suicide by shooting herself through her mouth.

The concept of "abandoning the flesh" is popular in the Lain fandom and is something of a meme or inside joke between fans. On [[Mebious.co.uk]], for example, people occasionally encourage each other to ascend to the upper level of [[reality]], the Wired, and post about it after they have succeeded.

Schumann Resonances

The Schumann resonances are mentioned in [[Layer 09]]. They are a set of peaks in the electromagnetic field spectrum of the Earth. In Serial Experiments Lain, it is proposed that these resonances can affect the human brain directly and provide a means to connect to [[The Wired]] without using any devices.

These resonances are what allow the [[Psyche]] chip to function. [[Eiri]] modified [[Protocol 7]] to allow people to connect to the Wired through the Schumann resonances, and was fired from [[Tachibana Laboratories]] as a result. It is possible that he led the [[Knights of the Eastern Calculus]] to distribute the Psyche chip to fulfill his ideal of connecting the human race into a neural network for the Earth.

In the [[Serial_Experiments_Lain_(anime)|anime]], a website whose url appears on a pressure guage on [[Iwakura_Lain|Lain's]] computer. In the real world, it is the website that is arguably the central hub on the Lain online community; several websites, including this one, have come from its visitors.

Mebious is known to have inane comments, random numbers and, periodically, text in Russian.

Despite the challenges such a chaotic environment poses, several people have managed to make contact through the site, and interact more in other places on the internet (to the annoyance of some of them).

It is a hobby of Mebious users to attempt to track down the website's creator, who is known to be called "Tadzio Troman-Taylor" (aka monkiesnake). He is notoriously difficult to find information about in comparison to Internet users.

==Input fields==
There are input boxes for text and images, labeled "in_txt" and "in_img", respectively. When an input fails, the "in_txt/img" button turns from green to red.

10 lines of text are displayed at a time. Each row can have a maximum of 48 characters.

Some characters in each line of text randomly turn into symbols that look like the character in question. This only affects lower-case letters. This allows text to remain legible but makes it difficult to follow URLs.

Text may eventually reappear as part of the background image (bg_out).

Those new to Mebious often have trouble with image uploading.

It is possible that there is a limit to the total file size that one user can attempt to upload per day. This means that if the limit is exceeded on the first attempt, then no images can be uploaded that day.

Sometime in 2010, a suicidal person appeared on Mebious. Several people (or perhaps just one, it is impossible to know for sure) encouraged him or her to commit suicide, and some other group tried to convince them not to. This caused much controversy amongst the users. Someone claiming to be the same person appeared about a year later, stating that they had entered therapy and was doing better.

In early 2011, a troll who posted in ALL CAPS spammed Mebious. This incident has since been resolved.

On the 8th of November 2011, a spammer appeared, posting a URL amongst nonsensical combinations of English words. This incident has not yet been resolved. (May have cleared up now - Feb 2012)

In October 2012, someone decided to start frequently posting the word "lewd", for apparently no reason.

==Long summary==
A screen is clicked on. A digitized image of Lain is on the screen. Lain says, "Well, it became unclear again. Where am I? Here, or where you are? I exist everywhere where you are. I know it. Because I am connected to you. But I…. Where is the true Me? Well, I know there is no true me. I am only inside of people who know I exist. But is this really me talking right now? Am I myself? I… Who am I?" The screen is clicked off.

This episode starts off with scenes just before the end of episode 12.

Masami Eiri's flesh is reassembling. He howls in pain and outrage. Alice and Lain cling to each other. Alice is terrified while Lain remains strangely calm. One of Masami's appendages wraps around the girls and lifts them off the ground. Lain cries, "Alice!" Lain's Navi equipment seems to be propelled towards the seething mass that is Masami. Lain yells at Masami, "You said that your flesh wasn't necessary, didn't you?" Alice screams hysterically. Lain tries to calm her friend down by saying her name, "Alice," and holding onto her trembling hands. Alice is not able to realize that Masami is gone. His body had been smashed by the Navi equipment. His reign as a god has ended. Alice tries to fight out of Lain's grasp. Her hand makes contact with Lain's face and draws blood. Lain's lip starts to quiver as she realizes how she again has hurt Alice. Lain thinks, "Everything I ever did for Alice was always wrong… I am really…" Lain grabs Alice and deeply embraces her. This seems to finally quiet her friend down. Alice is in shock. She is unable to return the embrace. Lain clings to Alice and cries her name, "Alice. Alice." Still holding onto her, Lain says, "Alice I'm so sorry…I'm sorry."

A computer screen reads, "All Reset…Return" The back screen has many English words on it like, raw, mean, and lastly, sad. Past scenes of the show seem to rewind in a quick manner. The computer screen goes blank.

It is light outside. The power lines are humming. The door to Lain's house opens. A combination of Japanese and Western style breakfast items is being served. Mika pushes herself away from the table and says, "It was a nice meal." She has left some food on her plate. Her dad notices this and quips, "There's a little left." Mom says, "She's on a diet." Mika scolds her, "Don't say such a thing." Mom is eating rice. (Still her favorite thing to do- Shades) Dad informs her, "Some merchandise may come today. Please pay for it when it comes." His wife guesses, "A computer part again?" He does not respond. Both continue to eat their breakfast. Dad glances at the empty chair at the table. It is almost as if he is looking for someone else to be there. Such is not the case. This is a family of three, not four, so of course there is only a place setting for three. He says, "Say." His wife replies, "What?" He continues to stare at the empty chair. It almost appears as if he has a half remembered memory about someone sitting in the chair but can't bring it to the surface. He dismisses the thought, "No…nothing."

The door has been left open to Lain's house. Scenes are shown of the path once taken by Lain on her way to school. She is not at her usual place on the train. (A really cool song by Chabo plays in the background throughout the next sequence-Shades)

Girls are walking to school. Alice stops and looks up at the building. Juri and Reika call her name, "Alice!" They run and catch up with her. Reika asks, "Where should we go tonight?" Juri tugs on Alice's arm and pleads, "Cyberia! Cyberia!" Alice replies, "Sure." She then reaches for her pocket Navi and says, "I'll send a mail." Juri and Reika look at each other with curious expressions. Juri asks, "Alice, who are you sending mail to?" Alice seems to ponder the question. Her Navi screen is set to its mail server. She doesn't seem to be able to remember who it is she wanted to write. Juri thinks she know who Alice had in mind and asks, "Will you call her again?" Alice asks, "Who?" Juri points to someone in the crowd of girls. It is Chisa. Alice says, "Chisa?" Juri replies, "Yes, Yomada Chisa. We took her to Cybria once because you suggested it. But she didn't seem interested whatsoever." Reika quips, "It seems useless." Alice says, "I see." Alice then looks down and smiles. Her friends inquire what is on her mind. Alice replies, "Nothing. I just had a strange thought." Reika repeats, "A strange thought?" Alice recites, "It never happened if there is no memory of it." Reika asks, "Memory?" Alice continues, "Someone never existed if there is no memory of them." Reika and Juri exchange quizzical glances with each other. Reika finally asks, "What are you talking about?" Alice replies, "It has to be no one then." She starts to walk to class and says, "Now let's hurry so we can study." Reika and Juri yell, "Alice", and run to catch up with her.

Masayuki, Myu Myu, and Taro are playing a scissors, paper, and stone type of game. Masayuki whines, "I lost again." The three are crossing a street. Taro says, "Let's play." Myu Myu says, "Hurry! Hurry!" Masayuki cries, "Wait for me!" Myu Myu scolds him, "Moron." Taro stops to attend to his beeping Navi. It is shaped like a gun. He pushes a button and says, "A mail?" Myu Myu peeks over his shoulder, "What? What?" The screen reads "KIDS Technology." Lain's image appears briefly then quickly disappears. Myu Myu puts her hands on her hips and asks, "Who is that girl?" Taro replies, "No… I don't know her." Masayuki finally catches up and asks, "What?"

A teenage boy and his little sister are also walking down the street. The twosome draw near Taro, Myu Myu and Masayuki. The teen says to Taro, "You're machine looks good." Taro looks at him and says, "What?" The teen is the Accela boy who killed himself at Cyberia. The teen says, "I also altered mine a little." His sister pulls his sleeve and says, "Hurry brother! Hurry! Hurry! Mom is waiting!" He answers, "I know," then to Taro and company he says, "Bye." The brother and sister walk away. Myu Myu and Masayuki start to run. Myu Myu yells, "Go! Go!" Masayuki pleads "Let's toss for it again!" Taro has not moved. He looks down at his Navi then follows his friends. Myu Myu mock threatens him, "Taro, I'll leave you!" Masayuki is still whining, "It's not fair. Let's toss for it again." Taro and a man walk by each other. The man is talking to himself, "I'll quit. I'll quit that damned company. They make me do this job…" He is Masami Eiri. He shakes his fist angrily and continues his jabbering, "They look down on me…" Taro puts his Navi away and joins his friends. Masami is still walking and grumbling, "I'll quit, I'll quit." He looks up at two men fixing a street light. It is Carl and the short guy. Masami stops to watch them work for a few minutes. He then resumes his walking and grumbling, "I'll quit…quit…I'm definitely quitting today!"

Scenes of power lines are shown. That familiar hum is in the air.

A black screen has text words which read, "It never happened if there is no memory of it. Human memory is just a record. You can rewrite the record." Lain's voice says, "Really?"

Present day…. Present time…. Ha ha ha ha!!!!!

The stock opening footage is shown. Lain is in the Wired. She is standing on a deserted street. She is upset. She bends down and starts to cry. All is silent around her. Lain in the Wired's voice asks, "Why are you crying? Because you deleted yourself from everybody's memory?" Lain continues to cry. Lain in the Wired says, "But that's what you wanted, isn't it?" Lain in the Wired appears near Lain. Lain says, "Yes, but…" Lain in the Wired interrupts her, "The information of a dead person won't leak from the Wired again." Lain's crying has subsided to sobs. Lain in the Wired says, "So Lain doesn't need to exist. That's what you wished for, right?" Lain says, "You talk like that man." Lain in the Wired reminds her, "That man? There has been no 'that man'. Even if he exists, he won't get any funny ideas about becoming a god again." Lain notes, "I'm nowhere. If I'm nowhere, what am I? Who am I?" Lain in the Wired says, "You said it yourself." Lain asks, "What?" Lain in the Wired replies, "The Wired is not the upper layer of the real World. He was wrong. The network is a field to transport information. Information doesn't stand still. Information always functions by flowing." Lain says, "I see. Human memory…Personal memory…and the history of mankind." Lain in the Wired says, "Yes. Commonly owned unconsciousness."

The two Lains are now on a train. Lain in the Wired continues, "Do you think human beings can create a way to store such an enormous memory by themselves?" Lain says, "The Wired was only for connecting. But where was it connected to?" The two Lains are now on a stairway. Lain in the Wired says, "Do you think humans need to know?" Lain asks, "What?" Lain in the Wired says, "Although they haven't known, they could make a go for it." The two Lains are now at Cyberia watching the people dance. Lain in the Wired says, "The human world has created its own god and they've prayed to it. They have defined the world in their own way." JJ the DJ is spinning tracks in his booth. Lain says, "I hate what you just said." The two Lains have made their way to a classroom. Lain in the Wired says, "Even if you don't like it, it is Lain. It is me. You know this. Yes, Lain is not human." Lain in the Wired laughs. Lain is looking out a classroom window. Lain in the Wired says, "Lain exists everywhere. Lain watches still. Yes, Lain is a goddess." Lain says, "You're wrong! You're wrong!" The two Lains are outside at night on a busy street. Lain in the Wired says, "Its easy to be a goddess. I think its easier than being a human." The two Lains are on the roof at the school. Lain in the Wired says, "You won't need to do anything. You should only be and observe. Nobody looks down on Lain. Nobody hates Lain." Lain looks dejected and says, "That…" but doesn't finish. Lain in the Wired says, "Well Lain, perhaps you should start again, since you reset them." Lain angrily turns and yells at Lain in the Wired, "Stop it!" Lain in the Wired looks stunned and her image begins to tune out and get fuzzy. Lain in the Wired disappears. Lain is alone. Lain in the Wired delivers a parting remark, "So what are you Lain?" Lain falls to her knees and says, "I…I…what am I?"

The voice of Lain's dad commands, "Come here, Lain." Lain looks up. Her father's face looms large in the sky above her. Lain asks, "Dad?"

Lain is in her bear suit.(That should make Balto happy, but it still scares me!-Shades Yipee! - Balto) She and her father are sitting at a table that is floating in the air. Her dad says, "Lain you don't need to wear such a thing anymore."(Ha- looks like someone besides me thinks that bear suit is…wrong- Shades But it's fun! - Balto) Lain concedes to his statement with a little smile. She asks, "Dad, do you know?" He replies, "What?" Lain stammers, "I…everyone…" He tries to fill in the blanks, "You love everyone? Isn't that right?" Lain shakes her head and starts to cry. Her dad says, "Lain, next time I'll prepare a good tea. And a madeleine. Certainly that would taste good."

The city is shown at night. Lain's voice says, "There are just not memories of the past. There are also memories of today and tomorrow."

A man says, "I declare." A woman responds, "Really!" They are a nice looking young couple who are walking in the shopping district of the city. The woman grabs his arm and says, "Wait." It is Alice. She is about 22 years old. She has let her hair grow longer. Alice says to her boyfriend, "I did what you wanted last time. Very tolerantly." She grins and says, "I'll choose a curtain for our bedroom." He boyfriend smiles and agrees, "Okay, okay." Someone is watching the couple. The boyfriend adds, "I'll do whatever you like." Alice teases, "Yes, you are a good student." The couple then laughs and continue to walk. Alice's attention is drawn to an overhead walkway. Her boyfriend asks, "What happened?" Lain is on the walkway. She is peering over the railing and watching Alice. Alice is mesmerized by Lain. She turns to her boyfriend and says, "Sorry… wait a bit." Alice then heads for the walkway. Her boyfriend yells, "Hey, wait!"

Alice runs up the steps and closes in on Lain. Lain smiles at her. Alice returns the smile and walks closer to her. Alice bends down to get eye level with her and says, "Good afternoon." Lain softly returns the greeting. Alice asks, "I've met you haven't I?" Lain does not answer. Alice gets an idea and says, "Were you a student where I taught as a student teacher?" She answers her own question with, "No, that's not it. Hmm." Lain continues to smile at her. Lain finally says, "How do you do?" (Lain uses a very formal Japanese greeting here that is used exclusively for the first time you meet a person- Shades) Alice replies, "What?" She is confused by the use of such a formal greeting because she was convinced that she knew this girl. Lain stresses that they have never met by saying, "It is how do you do?" Alice stands corrected, "Really? Well, how do you do? I am Alice. Don't you think my name sounds funny? I'm a bit embarrassed about it. And you are?" Lain replies, "Lain." Alice stands up and repeats the name, "Lain." The name seems to resonate in her mind but she is unable to make a connection. Her boyfriend has joined them and asks, "Do you know her?" Alice replies, "No. Wrong person." Alice bends down towards Lain and says, "Goodbye. Maybe I'll see you again sometime." Lain smiles. Alice gets up and says, "Bye." Her boyfriend says, "Bye, Lain." The couple walk off together. Lain continues to watch them and says, "Yes. I can see you anytime."

A computer screen is turned on. Lain's image appears. Lain says, "I'm here. So I will always be with you. Always." The screen is turned off.

It is nighttime. The power lines are humming.

A close up view of Lain's eye. "The one truth…God," she says to herself. She is facing the visage of Masami Eiri. He is the self proclaimed God in the Wired, Deus. He says, "Yes it is me Lain." Lain just looks at him.

Flashback to the Yamanote Line rail track 13. This is where Masami Eiri was killed by a train.

Lain asks Masami, "Are you God?" He replies, "Yes, I'm God." He verbalizes the questions flooding her mind, "How can you be a God? I don't understand. Aren't you already dead as a human? You can't be a God." Lain replies, "I understand that the flesh is not necessary. Death is only a means to abandon the flesh." Masami seems surprised that she is so matter of fact about the subject. He says, "This is about Chisa."

Flashback to Chisa's death. The floating text words appear, "I… don't need to be here."

Lain confirms his statement, "It is… yes…. But I improved the Protocol that rules the Wired." Masami smiles, "Yes, you did. But the Protocol is only an agreement." Lain agrees, "Yes. But I programmed a code that will function in a higher phase." Masami rebukes her, "So what?" Lain looks up at him and says, "I programmed some compressed information into the Protocol as a code." Masami asks, "What kind of information?" Lain replies, "A human's memory…. All the thoughts, problems, memories, and emotions of myself," then she lets him know she is aware of his true identity, "Masami Eiri." Masami asks, "What does it mean?" Lain says, "I can live forever in the Wired as an anonymous existence, and rule there by information."

"What should you be called," Masami asks of her. Lain replies, "God." Masami cautions, "There is no God." Lain is unfazed by his remark, "Even if I could be a common existence in the Wired and affect it, I can't be a God without believers." Masami says, "But there are. No, you created them." Lain replies, "Knights." Masami and Lain stare at each other. Masami ends the stare down and disappears. He does not leave without a few parting words, "You don't need your flesh Lain." Lain gets an angry look on her face. "No. You're lying," she emphatically declares. Thus concludes their first "in person" meeting.

Lain walks into her classroom. Her classmates are giggling and talking amongst themselves. Lain watches as Alice and Reika hang out with Juri at Juri's desk. The three girls seem to be deeply engrossed in their conversation. Lain walks to the front row towards her desk. She becomes alarmed as she realizes her desk is missing. She stands dumbfounded in the space it once occupied. The teacher walks in and the class representative commands the class, " Stand up! Bow!" Lain remains motionless. The teacher instructs her class, "Now put away your textbooks." (Ahhh….Pop quiz!!…@#%#!!Thank God those days are looonnggg goonnee- Shades ^ /^;) The teacher starts to hand out a test. When she gets to Lain's row, she hands the test right past Lain, as though she cannot see her. Lain's hands are set in a position indicating she is ready to receive the test. She is stunned that the teacher is unaware of her presence. Lain looks down at her empty hands and says, "I…I'm real…. I'm alive….I'm here…. Why have things come to this? Did I do something wrong? I've always tried not to do so. I've always tried not to say something wrong…. Is it true? I really might not have flesh?" Lain turns to look for Alice, her protector, her friend. Alice says, "You're right Lain. You are no longer needed in the real World." Lain's eyes widen. Alice is quietly completing her quiz. She has said nothing in reality. Lain looks as if her life is spinning out of control. Her classmates continue to take their exam, unaware of her.

Lain is walking home. Her shadow seems to be full of energy. Lain's house is very dark. She enters and announces, "I'm home." No one responds. Lain begins to check each room. They are all devoid of any human presence. Her parents room is unoccupied, its beds stripped. It almost seems as though the house was quickly abandoned. The refrigerator door was left open. Plants have died on the window sill from lack of care. Mika's room is messy and minus Mika. Clothes and personal effects are strewn on the floor.

Lain has a flashback of Mika. Mika is saying, "Pee pee. Gaaa…." Lain bends down and starts to collect her sister's belongings. She hears a noise from behind her. Lain turns and sees her dad is standing in the doorway. She puts the items down and stands up to greet him, "Papa?" Her dad says, "It is now time for us to say goodbye, Lain." Lain looks puzzled. He continues, "Didn't you notice? Our job is over. Although it was a short time, I couldn't do enough for you. Now you are free. You can do whatever you wish." Lain continues to stand and look at her father with a blank look on her face. Lain's dad says, "No, you have been free since the beginning. Although I was not allowed to tell you goodbye, I loved you." Lain is still motionless and speechless. Her dad adds, "I didn't enjoy pretending to be a family. But I think that I did envy you. Bye." He turns and leaves the room. Lain stares at the spot he vacated. She collects herself and yells, "Wait," then runs after him. He is walking down the stairs when he hears her. Lain yells down to him, "Don't leave me alone!" Without turning to look at her he replies, "Alone? You are not alone." Lain gasps. Her dad continues, "When you connect to the Wired, you will always be welcomed. That is the reason you were born." He continues his exit from the household they shared. Lain stands confused and afraid at the top of the stairs. Her family, if that's who they really were, is gone.

A scene of the city. A light mist rolls across the streets. Lain says, "I am not alone." Digital Lain is in the Wired. Shadowy figures walk by her. Energy passes through the circuit wires. A female voice asks her, "Do you want to do something Lain? This is your world, Lain." Digital Lain looks up and asks, "Who are the Knights? They may have created a false me." A male voice answers, "I don't agree." Another male voice interjects, "It's possible. It seems that the Knights of Eastern Calculus originated with the temple Knights. They have used 'the group of the unconscious' before the appearance of the Wired. 'The group of the unconscious' is an invisible network between humans." The female voice asks, "What do you want to know Lain?" Digital Lain now seems to be standing in the cityscape with the light mist. Her question is, "Knights…. Who are the Knights?" The female voice replies, "Do you want to know, Lain?" Digital Lain says, "God in the Wired can be God because there are believers of God." Everything fades to black around Digital Lain. She gasps in surprise as huge amounts of energy seem to blast through the Wired.

An outside view of the Cyberia Café and Club. The club is empty save for Taro, Masayuki, and Myu Myu. Masayuki says, "Taro, shall we go to another place? Don't you feel bored?" Taro is preoccupied with his pocket Navi. Myu Myu agrees, "How about going to my house?" Myu Myu looks at Masayuki and says, "Masayuki, you don't need to come." Masayuki is clueless, "What are you saying?" Myu Myu answers, "Taro will not keep you company. You are still a child." Masayuki grimaces and says, "What are you saying? You're also a child, Myu Myu." Taro is still staring at his Navi, oblivious to their conversation. The screen displays the words, "Knights of the Eastern Calculus." Images of the Knights and their names appear under the banner. The image of [[Takuyoshi Masuoka]], and [[Masatsugu Shoko]] appear, along with their names. Taro's eyes widen. He is concerned with the implications of this information. Myu Myu says, "I'm a girl. Younger is always better for girls. Right, Taro?" ( I hope she's not talking about what I think she's talking about. That would be…wrong- Shades) Taro ignores the both of them and continues to watch as the secret membership of the Knights became public knowledge. Masayuki asks him, "What does the Net News say?" Taro can only respond with, "List." Myu Myu asks, "What list?" She and Masayuki try to peer over Taro's shoulder. Taro says, "Why is there a list of the members of Knights on the Net News?" Myu Myu and Masayuki look at each other with puzzled looks on their faces. They don't grasp the gravity of the situation and resume peeking over Taro's shoulder.

The businessman's name is [[Takuyoshi Masuoka]]. He is in his office and is horrified to see his name and image posted on the Net News. He rolls his chair away from his Navi. He begins to shove papers and disks into a briefcase. Panic spreads across his features. There is a knock on his door. "Y..yes…" he asks? In walk the men in black, Carl and the shorter guy. They stop in front of Takuyoshi's desk. The shorter man says, "Don't say a thing." Takuyoshi backs away from them. His back is pressed to a huge window, which overlooks the city. Carl moves closer and says, "Take your responsibility." Carl them muffles Takuyoshi's mouth with one hand and injects a liquid into the stunned man's neck with his other hand. Takuyoshi falls to the floor. A lightning bolt punctuates the moment.

The secretary of Takuyoshi Masuoka softly knocks on her boss's door. He does not respond. She opens the door and gasps as she sees her boss slumped over in his chair with his head on his desk, dead.

The scene shifts to the apartment of red headband man. He is laying spread-eagled on his bed, dead. A small reading lamp is pointed down at his mouth. The light illuminates the fact that his mouth will remain frozen open in silent protest.

The scene shifts to the home of [[Masatsugu Shoko]]. The jet fighter game is once again being played by her son, Syo. Syo informs his mom, "Mom, I lost." So engrossed in his game is he that Syo does not notice his mother is slumped at the kitchen table, her Navi before her. Syo says, "Earth to mom." An overheard view of her at the table confirms she is not only slumped at the table, but that she is dead. A pool of what appears to be blood, seeps from her head. Syo continues to talk with her, "It's your turn. If you won't play I'll continue it." Her Navi is still on. The last name Graver scrolls on the screen. It is followed by the name Janet Ginger. Syo says, "Mom, I'll beat you."

A news reporter announces, "Many people killed themselves all over the world today. The information agency and the police in each country started to investigate the cases." The screen shows the lifeless forms of some of the deceased. "All of them were concerned with network service. Informed sources says that they were members of a group called 'Knights'." The screen shows the symbol of the Knights. The news is turned off.

Lain is sitting in front of her Navi. Her eyes are half shut. (I could have said half open, so I guess that makes me a 'the glass is half empty' kind of girl- Shades) Some type of instrument is clipped to her lower lip. A cord is wrapped all around her body. Her multiple Navi screens flash with different messages behind her. Lain looks exhausted. Two pairs of feet are going upstairs to Lain's room. It is the men in black, Carl and the shorter guy. They open the door to her room. Carl enters first. The shorter man chuckles. Lain asks them, "Why did you do it?" Carl answers, "It was a request from our client. You found out the members of Knights all over the world. Now we are killing them all over the world." Lain says, "But that's…" She is interrupted by Carl. He continues, "The Wired must not be a special world. It must only help the real world." Lain says, "But…" Now she is interrupted by the shorter man, "You also must not exist in the Wired. But you are still alive." He chuckles before finishing his thought, "You may have the protection of God," and chuckles again. Carl says, "Soon, the remaining ghost of Masami Eiri in the Wired will be disinfected. Our client is now working to rewrite all of Protocol 7." Lain does not reply so Carl says, "We don't need God." The shorter man adds, "In the Wired or in the real World." He chuckles and leaves the room. Carl stares at Lain. He removes his visor and says, "We still can't even understand what you are." Digital Lain is in the Wired. Her image has returned to the location where she first met Masami Eiri. Digital Lain asks, "What will you do?" Masami Eiri appears. He repeats the question, "Well, what shall I do?" Digital Lain says, "You have no believers left." Wind whips by both Digital Lain and Masami. He says, "If so, I can't remain God. But there's one believer left. If there is one believer I'm still God." Digital Lain asks, "Who?" Masami chides her, "Don't say that! It's you Lain." When she does not respond he continues, "You can be you, because of me. You were born in the Wired. You were a legend in the Wired and a fairy tale heroine in the Wired." Digital Lain says, "A lie." Masami responds, "Iwakura Lain in the real World is only a hologram of it. You are a homologous by artificial ribosome. You have never had a true body." At this, Digital Lain turns her head to look at Masami. She again says, "A lie."

Scene shift to another part of the city. Masami says, "False family, false friends…everything was false." Digital Lain says, "A lie" and her eyes brim up with tears. Then she yells, "No, that's not true!" Masami is holding Digital Lain's hair. He says, "I pity you, Lain. You are completely alone now. But I am with you. I love you. You'll love me, the one who sent you to this world." Tears freely fall from Digital Lain's eyes. Masami says, "I am your creator." He nuzzles his face into her hair then says, "Love me…please, Lain."

Digital Lain says, "Another." Masami looks a little worried and asks, "What?" Digital Lain pulls away from him and says, "Another me." Masami says, "Not another you. It's the real you." He puts his hand on Digital Lain's shoulder. She quickly shrugs it off and turns to look at him. She angrily says, "It doesn't matter which it is!" Her words seem to ripple with power. Masami is literally almost blown away by them. He chuckles. Power lines snap around Digital Lain and fall to her feet. She is left standing alone.

A close up view of Lain's eye. "The one truth…God," she says to herself. She is facing the visage of Masami Eiri. He is the self proclaimed God in the Wired, Deus. He says, "Yes it is me Lain." Lain just looks at him.

Flashback to the Yamanote Line rail track 13. This is where Masami Eiri was killed by a train.

Lain asks Masami, "Are you God?" He replies, "Yes, I'm God." He verbalizes the questions flooding her mind, "How can you be a God? I don't understand. Aren't you already dead as a human? You can't be a God." Lain replies, "I understand that the flesh is not necessary. Death is only a means to abandon the flesh." Masami seems surprised that she is so matter of fact about the subject. He says, "This is about Chisa."

Flashback to Chisa's death. The floating text words appear, "I… don't need to be here."

Lain confirms his statement, "It is… yes…. But I improved the Protocol that rules the Wired." Masami smiles, "Yes, you did. But the Protocol is only an agreement." Lain agrees, "Yes. But I programmed a code that will function in a higher phase." Masami rebukes her, "So what?" Lain looks up at him and says, "I programmed some compressed information into the Protocol as a code." Masami asks, "What kind of information?" Lain replies, "A human's memory…. All the thoughts, problems, memories, and emotions of myself," then she lets him know she is aware of his true identity, "Masami Eiri." Masami asks, "What does it mean?" Lain says, "I can live forever in the Wired as an anonymous existence, and rule there by information."

"What should you be called," Masami asks of her. Lain replies, "God." Masami cautions, "There is no God." Lain is unfazed by his remark, "Even if I could be a common existence in the Wired and affect it, I can't be a God without believers." Masami says, "But there are. No, you created them." Lain replies, "Knights." Masami and Lain stare at each other. Masami ends the stare down and disappears. He does not leave without a few parting words, "You don't need your flesh Lain." Lain gets an angry look on her face. "No. You're lying," she emphatically declares. Thus concludes their first "in person" meeting.

Lain walks into her classroom. Her classmates are giggling and talking amongst themselves. Lain watches as Alice and Reika hang out with Juri at Juri's desk. The three girls seem to be deeply engrossed in their conversation. Lain walks to the front row towards her desk. She becomes alarmed as she realizes her desk is missing. She stands dumbfounded in the space it once occupied. The teacher walks in and the class representative commands the class, " Stand up! Bow!" Lain remains motionless. The teacher instructs her class, "Now put away your textbooks." (Ahhh….Pop quiz!!…@#%#!!Thank God those days are looonnggg goonnee- Shades ^ /^;) The teacher starts to hand out a test. When she gets to Lain's row, she hands the test right past Lain, as though she cannot see her. Lain's hands are set in a position indicating she is ready to receive the test. She is stunned that the teacher is unaware of her presence. Lain looks down at her empty hands and says, "I…I'm real…. I'm alive….I'm here…. Why have things come to this? Did I do something wrong? I've always tried not to do so. I've always tried not to say something wrong…. Is it true? I really might not have flesh?" Lain turns to look for Alice, her protector, her friend. Alice says, "You're right Lain. You are no longer needed in the real World." Lain's eyes widen. Alice is quietly completing her quiz. She has said nothing in reality. Lain looks as if her life is spinning out of control. Her classmates continue to take their exam, unaware of her.

Lain is walking home. Her shadow seems to be full of energy. Lain's house is very dark. She enters and announces, "I'm home." No one responds. Lain begins to check each room. They are all devoid of any human presence. Her parents room is unoccupied, its beds stripped. It almost seems as though the house was quickly abandoned. The refrigerator door was left open. Plants have died on the window sill from lack of care. Mika's room is messy and minus Mika. Clothes and personal effects are strewn on the floor.

Lain has a flashback of Mika. Mika is saying, "Pee pee. Gaaa…." Lain bends down and starts to collect her sister's belongings. She hears a noise from behind her. Lain turns and sees her dad is standing in the doorway. She puts the items down and stands up to greet him, "Papa?" Her dad says, "It is now time for us to say goodbye, Lain." Lain looks puzzled. He continues, "Didn't you notice? Our job is over. Although it was a short time, I couldn't do enough for you. Now you are free. You can do whatever you wish." Lain continues to stand and look at her father with a blank look on her face. Lain's dad says, "No, you have been free since the beginning. Although I was not allowed to tell you goodbye, I loved you." Lain is still motionless and speechless. Her dad adds, "I didn't enjoy pretending to be a family. But I think that I did envy you. Bye." He turns and leaves the room. Lain stares at the spot he vacated. She collects herself and yells, "Wait," then runs after him. He is walking down the stairs when he hears her. Lain yells down to him, "Don't leave me alone!" Without turning to look at her he replies, "Alone? You are not alone." Lain gasps. Her dad continues, "When you connect to the Wired, you will always be welcomed. That is the reason you were born." He continues his exit from the household they shared. Lain stands confused and afraid at the top of the stairs. Her family, if that's who they really were, is gone.

A scene of the city. A light mist rolls across the streets. Lain says, "I am not alone." Digital Lain is in the Wired. Shadowy figures walk by her. Energy passes through the circuit wires. A female voice asks her, "Do you want to do something Lain? This is your world, Lain." Digital Lain looks up and asks, "Who are the Knights? They may have created a false me." A male voice answers, "I don't agree." Another male voice interjects, "It's possible. It seems that the Knights of Eastern Calculus originated with the temple Knights. They have used 'the group of the unconscious' before the appearance of the Wired. 'The group of the unconscious' is an invisible network between humans." The female voice asks, "What do you want to know Lain?" Digital Lain now seems to be standing in the cityscape with the light mist. Her question is, "Knights…. Who are the Knights?" The female voice replies, "Do you want to know, Lain?" Digital Lain says, "God in the Wired can be God because there are believers of God." Everything fades to black around Digital Lain. She gasps in surprise as huge amounts of energy seem to blast through the Wired.

An outside view of the Cyberia Café and Club. The club is empty save for Taro, Masayuki, and Myu Myu. Masayuki says, "Taro, shall we go to another place? Don't you feel bored?" Taro is preoccupied with his pocket Navi. Myu Myu agrees, "How about going to my house?" Myu Myu looks at Masayuki and says, "Masayuki, you don't need to come." Masayuki is clueless, "What are you saying?" Myu Myu answers, "Taro will not keep you company. You are still a child." Masayuki grimaces and says, "What are you saying? You're also a child, Myu Myu." Taro is still staring at his Navi, oblivious to their conversation. The screen displays the words, "Knights of the Eastern Calculus." Images of the Knights and their names appear under the banner. The image of the businessman, and [[Masatsugu Shoko]] appear, along with their names. Taro's eyes widen. He is concerned with the implications of this information. Myu Myu says, "I'm a girl. Younger is always better for girls. Right, Taro?" ( I hope she's not talking about what I think she's talking about. That would be…wrong- Shades) Taro ignores the both of them and continues to watch as the secret membership of the Knights became public knowledge. Masayuki asks him, "What does the Net News say?" Taro can only respond with, "List." Myu Myu asks, "What list?" She and Masayuki try to peer over Taro's shoulder. Taro says, "Why is there a list of the members of Knights on the Net News?" Myu Myu and Masayuki look at each other with puzzled looks on their faces. They don't grasp the gravity of the situation and resume peeking over Taro's shoulder.

The businessman's name is Takuyoshi Masuoka. He is in his office and is horrified to see his name and image posted on the Net News. He rolls his chair away from his Navi. He begins to shove papers and disks into a briefcase. Panic spreads across his features. There is a knock on his door. "Y..yes…" he asks? In walk the men in black, Carl and the shorter guy. They stop in front of Takuyoshi's desk. The shorter man says, "Don't say a thing." Takuyoshi backs away from them. His back is pressed to a huge window, which overlooks the city. Carl moves closer and says, "Take your responsibility." Carl them muffles Takuyoshi's mouth with one hand and injects a liquid into the stunned man's neck with his other hand. Takuyoshi falls to the floor. A lightning bolt punctuates the moment.

The secretary of Takuyoshi Masuoka softly knocks on her boss's door. He does not respond. She opens the door and gasps as she sees her boss slumped over in his chair with his head on his desk, dead.

The scene shifts to the apartment of red headband man. He is laying spread-eagled on his bed, dead. A small reading lamp is pointed down at his mouth. The light illuminates the fact that his mouth will remain frozen open in silent protest.

The scene shifts to the home of [[Masatsugu Shoko]]. The jet fighter game is once again being played by her son, Syo. Syo informs his mom, "Mom, I lost." So engrossed in his game is he that Syo does not notice his mother is slumped at the kitchen table, her Navi before her. Syo says, "Earth to mom." An overheard view of her at the table confirms she is not only slumped at the table, but that she is dead. A pool of what appears to be blood, seeps from her head. Syo continues to talk with her, "It's your turn. If you won't play I'll continue it." Her Navi is still on. The last name Graver scrolls on the screen. It is followed by the name Janet Ginger. Syo says, "Mom, I'll beat you."

A news reporter announces, "Many people killed themselves all over the world today. The information agency and the police in each country started to investigate the cases." The screen shows the lifeless forms of some of the deceased. "All of them were concerned with network service. Informed sources says that they were members of a group called 'Knights'." The screen shows the symbol of the Knights. The news is turned off.

Lain is sitting in front of her Navi. Her eyes are half shut. (I could have said half open, so I guess that makes me a 'the glass is half empty' kind of girl- Shades) Some type of instrument is clipped to her lower lip. A cord is wrapped all around her body. Her multiple Navi screens flash with different messages behind her. Lain looks exhausted. Two pairs of feet are going upstairs to Lain's room. It is the men in black, Carl and the shorter guy. They open the door to her room. Carl enters first. The shorter man chuckles. Lain asks them, "Why did you do it?" Carl answers, "It was a request from our client. You found out the members of Knights all over the world. Now we are killing them all over the world." Lain says, "But that's…" She is interrupted by Carl. He continues, "The Wired must not be a special world. It must only help the real world." Lain says, "But…" Now she is interrupted by the shorter man, "You also must not exist in the Wired. But you are still alive." He chuckles before finishing his thought, "You may have the protection of God," and chuckles again. Carl says, "Soon, the remaining ghost of Masami Eiri in the Wired will be disinfected. Our client is now working to rewrite all of Protocol 7." Lain does not reply so Carl says, "We don't need God." The shorter man adds, "In the Wired or in the real World." He chuckles and leaves the room. Carl stares at Lain. He removes his visor and says, "We still can't even understand what you are." He's a [[Tachibana Laboratories]] employee, seen working on [[IPv7]] with [[Masami Eiri]] in a flashback. He is proficient with computers and has a high-end [[NAVI]] with multiple screens at home.

In [[Layer 01]] Lain approaches him -- a rare occurrence, according to Yasuo -- and asks for a new [[NAVI]]. He is amused by and encourages his daughter's new-found interest for NAVIs and the [[Wired]], approving her request due to her own machine being rapidly outdated and that she should not be afraid of the growing societal emphasis on the Wired. He asks Lain why she is interested, and she replies that she has to meet a [[Chisa Yomoda|friend]].

In the next episode, Yasuo is first seen engaging in tonsil hockey with his wife while Lain watches. He tells her that her NAVI has arrived, and Miho says to clean up quickly due to the hardware blocking the way. Yasuo offers to set the NAVI up for Lain after dinner, commenting that the new model is so powerful that he would like to use it himself. His daughter asks if he can set it up now, surprising him, but he complies. Just before Lain begins using her [[Lain's NAVI|NAVI]], he warns her not to use it too much with kids, championing the importance of more 'advanced' communication systems in more mature relationships. His daughter does not reply, instead addressing her NAVI, and Yasuo says that she can show off her new NAVI to her friends.

In [[Layer 03]] he interrupts Lain before she can read her mail, asking her if she has gotten used to her NAVI. When she doesn't respond he asks if there's something wrong. She shows him her [[Psyche|new device]] and asks if he knows what it is. He responds coldly that he doesn't know.

In the [[Layer 04|next layer]] he is first seen watching Lain's flurry of activity on her NAVI. He confirms to Miho over dinner that Lain is acting "weird". Later in the episode he confronts Lain and warns her that the Wired is just a communications platform, and should not be mixed up with the real world. Lain responds firmly, saying that "The border is not so well-defined. Soon, I'll be able to enter it and I'll be metamorphisized completely with full range and motion," and when he says that even the newest commercial NAVI cannot simulate reality, his daughter states that she can because she modified it. Yasuo asks if that is because of her Psyche chip, and Lain assures that she will always be herself.

Yasuo is less prominent in the [[Layer 05|fifth episode]], paying little attention to Mika when she asks if Lain was in [[Shibuya]] earlier. However, in Lain's room he manifests as a pale, ethereal figure and she asks if he is really her father. He talks about the Wired, and theorizes that the development of electricity and phones, which brought about the Wired must have created [[Reality|another world]]. They then discuss the existence of a [[God]], only a concept in the real world while a [[Deus]]-like entity may lurk in the Wired, of power "...that is written of in myths". He then says that it is possible that such an entity could affect the real world, perhaps by a "prophecy".

In [[Layer 06]], Yasuo is shocked by the changes in Lain's room, pockmarked with puddles of water and filled up almost completely with hardware. His concern is magnified when she does not seem to notice him. Yasuo does not appear in the next episode, though the [[Boss]] mercilessly interrogates Lain using details of her supposed family.

After not appearing for four episodes Yasuo bids Lain farewell, addressing her as "Miss Lain". He says that "our work is finished," and that she should have it figured out for herself now. Lain doesn't respond. He pities that he could not have done more for her in such a short time, but says that she is now free to become whatever she wishes, or rather, she was always free. Yauso goes on to say that though he was not allowed to say goodbye, he loved her. Lain is still speechless, and her 'father' says that he did not enjoy pretending to be a family, but says that he envied a being like Lain. As he leaves, Lain begs him not to leave her alone. Without turning to face her, he says "Alone? You're not alone. If you connect to the Wired, everyone will welcome you. That's the sort of being you were". With that, Yasuo and the rest of the Iwakura family disappear.

In [[Layer 13]], the reset returns the Iwakura family to normalcy. He tells Miho to make sure to receive and pay for a package. "Computer parts again?" she says. He doesn't reply. Yasuo is the only person that notices Lain's disappearance. He appears later, looming over a despaired Lain when she desperately questions her existence. Both Lain and Yasuo appear seated at a floating table. He says that Lain doesn't need to wear [[bear suit|that]] anymore. Lain nervously asks if "knows," and that "I...everyone". Her father interrupts her, saying with a knowing smile that "You love them? Isn't that right?" Lain begins to cry, and Yasuo says that he'll "...make us some nice tea next time. Hey, with some [[wikipedia:Madeleine (cake)#Literary reference|madeleines]]! Definitely. They're great."

Schumann Resonances

The Schumann resonances are mentioned in [[Layer 09]]. They are a set of peaks in the electromagnetic field spectrum of the Earth. In Serial Experiments Lain, it is proposed that these resonances can affect the human brain directly and provide a means to connect to the [[Wired]] without using any devices.

These resonances are what allow the [[Psyche]] chip to function. [[Eiri]] modified [[Protocol 7]] to allow people to connect to the Wired through the Schumann resonances, and was fired from [[Tachibana Laboratories]] as a result. It is possible that he led the [[Knights of the Eastern Calculus]] to distribute the Psyche chip to fulfill his ideal of connecting the human race into a neural network for the Earth.

The Schumann resonances are mentioned in [[Layer 09]]. They are a set of peaks in the electromagnetic field spectrum of the Earth. In Serial Experiments Lain, it is proposed that these resonances can affect the human brain directly and provide a means to connect to the [[Wired]] without using any devices.

These resonances are what allow the [[Psyche]] chip to function. [[Eiri]] modified [[Protocol 7]] to allow people to connect to the Wired through the Schumann resonances, and was fired from [[Tachibana Labs]] as a result. It is possible that he led the [[Knights of the Eastern Calculus]] to distribute the Psyche chip to fulfill his ideal of connecting the human race into a neural network for the Earth.

In [[SEL]], God is defined most loosely as an omnipresent being who has at least one follower, much like [[Eiri]] when he is claiming to be God of the [[Wired]], and most narrowly as an omnipresent, omnipotent and omniscient being, much like [[Lain]] at the end of the [[anime]].

On the [[Visual Experiments Lain]] page on [[Layer 04]] Religion, Lain is interviewed. The relevant portion of the interview, beginning with Lain's mention of God, is reproduced below:

The interviewer is suggested to be Eiri in disguise, speaking to Lain by a means similar to that seen in [[Layer 05]], in which he uses a holographic image of a doll, Lain's mother [[Miho]] and Lain's father [[Yasuo]] to speak to and influence Lain.

Lain's statement "There is if I believe there is" can be seen not as a means of avoiding the question but as a reflection of the state of affairs later, in [[Layer 10]]. All the [[Knights of the Eastern Calculus]], Eiri's followers, commit suicide and Lain claims that Eiri is no longer God because he has no remaining followers. However, Eiri responds that there is one believer left, so he can remain God. That believer is Lain. This way, whether or not Eiri is God of the Wired truly depends on whether Lain believes in him or not.

Suicide in Serial Experiments Lain

Suicide is a common occurrence in [[Lain]]'s world. The first suicide the viewer sees is the death of [[Yomoda Chisa]] by jumping from a building at the very beginning of [[Layer 01]]. The most common reason for doing so is to "abandon the flesh" and pursue an existence on the [[Wired]] alone.

After the members of the [[Knights of the Eastern Calculus]] are exposed in [[Layer 10]], they all commit suicide. They all seem to have been prepared for such a course of action.

[[Masami Eiri]] appears to have committed suicide by jumping in front of a train in order to become [[God]] in the Wired.

It is debatable whether Lain herself can be considered to have committed suicide at the end of the [[anime]]. She erases her own existence, including her past, in order to fix all the damage she has dealt to the world, but she still clearly exists in the Wired and, at one point, manifests in front of a grown-up [[Alice]].

In the [[game]], Lain commits suicide by shooting herself through her mouth.

The concept of "abandoning the flesh" is popular in the Lain fandom and is something of a meme or inside joke between fans. On [[Mebious.co.uk]], for example, people occasionally encourage each other to ascend to the upper level of [[reality]], the Wired, and post about it after they have succeeded.

[[Lain]]'s bear suit appears several times in the [[anime]]. It provides her with comfort when in intimidating situations, such as when using a [[NAVI]] for the first time in a long time, or when speaking with her [[family]]. It also functions as Lain's pyjamas.

Lain also has a bear hat that appears only in [[Layer 01]] when she turns on her NAVI.

Although its screentime is very limited, the bear suit has left a powerful impact on the fandom and bear motifs can be seen in a lot of Lain fanart.

Reset

The reset is a key moment that occurs during [[Layer 13]]. Because of all the damage she has caused to the [[real world]] and especially to her friend [[Alice]], [[Lain]] chooses to start the world over while erasing her own existence.

As a consequence, all the characters who were playing a role linked to Lain returned to their normal lives. The [[Men in Black]] became construction workers and [[Eiri]] remained a dissatisfied employee of [[Tachibana Labs]]. Alice grew into an ordinary and well-adjusted young lady.

The only people who noticed [[Lain]]'s absence or had any impression of her left were [[Iwakura Yasuo]], her surrogate father, and [[Mizuki Alice]], her best and perhaps only true friend.

After the reset, Lain appears before an older Alice. She still appears to be the same age.

The Knowledge Navigator or NAVI for short are high-powered computers designed around accessing [[The Wired]] with ease. While some aren't pretty to look at they are unmistakably powerful. NAVIs can come in almost any shape or form.

==First Model==
Of the more common NAVIs, the first is the Child's NAVI. It is distinguished by it's bright red shell and space saving design. It's primary purpose is to familiarize children of all ages with the computer so that they won't have to learn how to use one later in life. This gives companies the added bonus of not having to train their employees on how to operate a Navigator.

==Second Model==
The second is the common desktop model of the Knowledge Navigator. The computer is a single unit with a monitor built into the front of the box. While it's not as pretty or as space efficient as the Child's NAVI it is the most powerful consumer model on the market. Once assembled the NAVI is ready to connect to the Wired right out of the box. An added bonus to NAVIs are that, while you can use the keyboard and the mouse to maneuver within their OS, voice recognition and speech synthesis software comes preloaded to allow comfortable computer use... this feature is also included in the children's version of the NAVI.

==Third Model==
The third NAVI is a group of NAVIs in handheld form, or [[HandiNAVI]]. Most handheld NAVIs are designed with kids in mind, although adults use them as well. The first in this group is a rectangular model with the same bright red shell as the Child's NAVIs. It's under the hood power is comparable to a Child's NAVI but replaces the keyboard, and speech software with a stylus. It's primary function is an e-mail and chat device which includes live two-way audio transmission. The second handheld is almost identical to the previously described but has a different user interface replacing the stylus with a 'remote controlled car' style device and the small touch screen with VR glasses. The remaining handhelds are simply variants or customized models of the above two.

==Fourth Model==
Lastly, while pre-packaged NAVIs and handhelds are the most commonly used NAVIs, geeks and tech gurus enjoy building their own by themselves. Separate components can be purchased and assembled to create a NAVI that fits a given person's lifestyle or interest. While this is the preferred method of computer to those who are seriously delved into the arts of technology most homebrewed systems are not as powerful as their pre-packaged counterparts. This is because NAVIs that are pre-assembled are tweaked at the factory to provide maximum performance. It would take an absolute genius in the field of NAVI technology, and an enormous amount of money, to custom build a system that would out perform a top of the line consumer NAVI.

Under the hood hardware wise are the basics of any household computer. All high end NAVIs are designed to allow incredible amounts of upgrades and enhancements to the existing machine. This allows NAVIs to have longer lives preventing people from having to buy new ones every few years.

To compliment the vast technological innovations in the NAVI design is the Copland Operating System (OS). Copland OS, released by [[Tachibana Laboratories]], is the end result of many years of software engineering and study. It's predecessor, Communication Operating System, was the first OS to be used in the NAVI model line. After being successful with both the NAVI and its OS, Tachibana Laboratories released Copland using the 7th Generation Wired protocol, the newest generation of code created for accessing the Wired. 7th-Gen is still in use today. A remastered Blu-ray box set was released in Japan in 2009, and the US in 2012. It features the show redigitized to a 4:3 1080p format, with many CG sequences (such as the PRESENT DAY PRESENT TIME opening) re-rendered in higher quality.

==Plot==
''Serial Experiments Lain'' deals directly with the definition of [[reality]], which makes its complex plot difficult to summarize. The story is primarily based on the assumption that everything flows from human thought, [[memory]], and [[consciousness]] Therefore, events on screen can be considered hallucinations of Lain, of other protagonists, or of Lain fabricating the hallucinations of others. Story misdirection is central to the plotline; even the offscreen voices or narrations' information cannot be considered truthful. The series consists of a cross-reflection of [[Philosophy|philosophical]] themes instead of the traditional linear events depiction: episodes are called "[[Layer|layers]]".

''Serial Experiments Lain'' describes "[[the Wired]]" as the sum of human communication [[Telecommunications network|networks]], created with the telegraph and telephone services, and expanded with the [[Internet]] and subsequent networks. The anime assumes that the Wired could be linked to a system that enables unconscious communication between people and machines without physical [[interface]]. The storyline introduces such a system with the [[Schumann resonance]], a property of the Earth's magnetic field that theoretically allows for unhindered long distance communications. If such a link was created, the network would become equivalent to Reality as the general [[consensus]] of all perceptions and knowledge. The thin line between what is real and what is possible would then begin to blur.

[[Masami Eiri]] is introduced as the project director on [[Protocol 7]] (the next generation internet protocol in the series' timeframe) for major computer company [[Tachibana Labs]]. He has secretly included [[Computer programming|code]] of his own creation to give himself control of the Wired through the wireless system described above. He then "uploaded” his [[consciousness]] into the Wired and died in real life a few days after. These details are unveiled around the middle of the series, but this is the point where the story of ''Serial Experiments Lain'' begins.

Masami later explains that Lain is the artifact by which the wall between the [[virtual]] and [[material]] worlds is to fall, and that he needs her to get to the Wired and "abandon the flesh", as he did, to achieve his plan. The series sees him trying to convince her through interventions, using the promise of unconditional love, charm, fate, and, when all else fails, threats and force.

In the meantime, the anime follows a complex game of hide-and-seek between the "[[Knights of the Eastern Calculus]]", hackers who Masami claims are "believers that enable him to be a God in the Wired", and Tachibana Labs, who try to regain control of Protocol 7.

In the end, the viewer sees Lain realizing, after much introspection, that she has absolute power over everyone's mind and over reality itself. Her dialogue with different versions of herself show how she feels shunned from the material world, and how she is afraid to live in the Wired, where she has the possibilities and responsibilities of a goddess. The last scenes feature her erasing everything connected to herself from everyone’s memories. She is last seen unchanged - re-encountering her old friend [[Alice]], who is now married. Lain promises herself to look after Alice.
