Conjecture
In Konaka's Scenario Experiments Lain, a footnote says Hodgeson is named after Charles Dodgson, and not William Hope Hodgson. He makes no mention of spiritualists or scientists.
The creators of SEL may have designed him with early parapsychologists in mind. He shares a name with Australian spiritualist Richard Hodgson. Also, his face bears a resemblance to that of William James.
