Thousands of unofficial pieces of merchandise have been created - both doujin/fan-made, as well as counterfeit - inspired by the Serial Experiments Lain game and anime.
Pieces of counterfeit merchandise are considered distinct from fanworks. Descriptions of each of these categories have been included in their respective sections below.
Doujin and Fan-Made Merchandise
Many Lain-inspired fanworks and doujin items are "amateur and derivative in nature"[1]. Fan artists use the series as a base to build off of - creating original art, new merchandise, sculptures, and other unique pieces of fan artwork.
In Japan, additional freedom has been provided to doujin creators through the LainTTL program. Under these terms, creators in Japan are "...permitted to use derivative works of the animation work 'Serial Experiments Lain'...for commercial or non-commercial purposes free of charge"[2].
Counterfeit Merchandise
Counterfeit items generally re-use official artwork without permission, are made solely for profit, and their creators generally try to pass them off as official and authorized items.
Counterfeit DVDs
A number of counterfeit DVDs have been created in a multitude of languages and regions.
