Play as your own online identity.
Early branching, after the first screen of random rumours, where you choose which path to investigate. This will allow you to collect information on Lain, the Wired, the Knights or even the VN project itself. (Would it be amusing if there were "users" in the wired that tell the player about the visual novel project itself, and those users' handles were the same as those people responsible for making the VN?)
Possibly hiding hints and useful information that could then be used in the other stories.
