The Serial Experiments Lain anime was released on VHS tape, in addition to DVD.
The VHS releases of Lain differed in each country - in the United States, the series was released as a set of four tapes in paper sleeves. In Japan, it was released as a set of five tapes in plastic cases. The full details of each release and their differences have been included below.
United States Dubbed VHS Tapes - 1999
In the United States, Serial Experiments Lain was released as a set of four VHS tapes in paper sleeves. The right side of each tape's sleeve also contained a section of artwork - when all four tapes were aligned next to each other on a shelf, their designs combined into artwork of Lain.

In Japan, Serial Experiments Lain was released as a set of five VHS tapes in plastic cases. An additional sixth VHS tape named "lif.00 - Preview" was also available.
