//signal. is an upcoming official spin-off game based on the Serial Experiments Lain franchise. Developed by Team MJM, the game was initially set to be released on April 30, 2025, for Windows and macOS via Steam and itch.io, but has since been postponed to May 19. A digital version will be available for 1,000 JPY, while a limited CD-ROM edition will be priced at 1,700 JPY.
Summary
Described as an "occult RPG", //signal. allows players to explore the Wired by collecting logs, emails, and diaries to reconstruct past events and mend broken connections. The game aims to reveal new aspects of the original story and its protagonist, Lain Iwakura.
Development
//signal. is a derivative work that has received the endorsement of original series writer Chiaki J. Konaka. The project follows the derivative work guidelines set by NBCUniversal Entertainment Japan, which permits the development of fan-made content within defined parameters.
Release
The game is scheduled to launch digitally on May 19, 2025, with a limited physical edition also available. Originally, only 300 physical copies were planned, but due to overwhelming demand—over 5,000 pre-orders in less than a month—Team MJM initiated a crowdfunding campaign on Campfire, running from April 15 to May 31, 2025. The campaign aims to cover production costs for the additional physical editions and enhance the game's quality. Backers can choose from various tiers, with rewards ranging from wallpapers and thank-you emails to the opportunity to design a new costume for the game.
