<p style="text-align:justify">Stock opening footage replays scenes of the city and its people at night. A female voice says, "If you want to avoid the pain, you should believe in God. Whether you believe in God or not, he is always with you."</p>

<p style="text-align:justify">Old newsreel style footage is showing scenes of a desert. A male voice announces over the footage, "On July 4, 1947 an unidentified flying object fell in a New Mexico desert." The footage seems to pan over a strange object. The announcer continues, "It has still not been proven what it was. Guesses became facts and rumors became histories."</p>

<p style="text-align:justify">A screen is clicked on. A digitized image of Lain is on the screen. Lain says, "Well, it became unclear again. Where am I? Here, or where you are? I exist everywhere where you are. I know it. Because I am connected to you. But I…. Where is the true Me? Well, I know there is no true me. I am only inside of people who know I exist. But is this really me talking right now? Am I myself? I… Who am I?" The screen is clicked off.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify">The power lines are humming. Lain is wearing her bear suit. She appears sad. Her Navi equipment is running with out her participation. The door to her room creaks open. Light can be seen through the crack. 'KERPLOSH.' It sounds as if someone has taken a step into Lain's room. Lain's bedroom floor is still covered with a layer of water from her Navi's cooling system. Lain hears the sound and asks, "Who?" Another splash is the only reply to her question. A steam valve releases pressure with soft exhales of air. Yet another splashy step is heard. Lain moves into a more alert sitting position. She crawls over her bed to peek around the corner of all her equipment. There is a short figure standing by the bedroom door. Lain's eyes widen and she sucks in air in surprise. The figure has an alien like appearance. It has long arms and a too big for its body head. It is also wearing a red and green striped sweater. Lain's eyes practically bug out of her head. The figure is an alien. It has the large, dark, almond shaped eyes often described by alien enthusiasts. The alien is smiling at Lain. After staring at each other for a moment, the alien disappears. Lain assumes a more compact sitting position. The sad look has returned to her face.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify">More newsreel information is shown. A photo of a man and a manila envelope is exhibited. The announcer explains, "In 1984, Jaime Shandera, a television producer, received an undeveloped film and some documents in a brown envelope from an anonymous person." An image of a document labeled 'Top Secret/ Majic' is shown. The announcer continues, "The so-called 'MJ-12 document' was in the film." The names of thirteen men and their corresponding photos are shown. The men are: Admiral Roscoe H. Hillenkoetter, Dr. Vannevar Bush, Secretary James V. Forrestal, General Nathan F. Twining, General Hoyt S. Vandenberg, Dr. Detlev Bronk, Dr. Jerome Hunsaker, Mr. Sidney W. Souers, Mr. Gordan Gray, Dr. Donald Menzel, General Robert M. Montague, and Dr. Lloyd V. Berkner. The announcer informs, "It was said that following the Roswell incident, twelve people made a secret promise with extra-terrestrials under President Truman's direct orders. Roscoe Hillenkoetter, Director of the CIA at the time, was among the twelve people. Now it is well known that President Truman's signature was only copied from another document. Vannevar Bush, the head of the department at MIT, was also of the twelve 'MJ-12' members."</p>

<p style="text-align:justify">This episode starts off with scenes just before the end of episode 12.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify">Lain commands her Navi, "Connect Wired." The menu screen appears. Lain closes her eyes and appears to go into a meditative state. In the Wired, three energy beings are present. One has only a mouth, one an eye, and the third, an ear. Digital Lain appears among the figures. She is questioning someone, "How can you make something that has already happened never have happened?" One of the images responds, "Are you Lain? I see." Digital Lain replies, "I don't know you, but you know me." The image tells her, "Information may not always flow bi-directional." Digital Lain is wearing the bear suit. There are several more energy beings standing around her. A male voice says, "You have been here since this Wired was created. You are free in here." Digital Lain gestures angrily and states, "But it's not me!" The male voiced image continues, "Yes, how long have we been here?" Digital Lain turns her head towards the voice. It continues, "I know we have not been here since the World was created." Another voice yells, "It's nothing to be concerned about! If existence can be remembered, it is already a record." A female being continues, "Do you wonder how old she is. She's still a child." Digital Lain snaps, "We're not talking about me now!" All of the energy beings disappear. Digital Lain is left alone. A look of fury is etched on her face.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify">Masami Eiri's flesh is reassembling. He howls in pain and outrage. Alice and Lain cling to each other. Alice is terrified while Lain remains strangely calm. One of Masami's appendages wraps around the girls and lifts them off the ground. Lain cries, "Alice!" Lain's Navi equipment seems to be propelled towards the seething mass that is Masami. Lain yells at Masami, "You said that your flesh wasn't necessary, didn't you?" Alice screams hysterically. Lain tries to calm her friend down by saying her name, "Alice," and holding onto her trembling hands. Alice is not able to realize that Masami is gone. His body had been smashed by the Navi equipment. His reign as a god has ended. Alice tries to fight out of Lain's grasp. Her hand makes contact with Lain's face and draws blood. Lain's lip starts to quiver as she realizes how she again has hurt Alice. Lain thinks, "Everything I ever did for Alice was always wrong… I am really…" Lain grabs Alice and deeply embraces her. This seems to finally quiet her friend down. Alice is in shock. She is unable to return the embrace. Lain clings to Alice and cries her name, "Alice. Alice." Still holding onto her, Lain says, "Alice I'm so sorry…I'm sorry."</p>
[[File:Eiri masami and protocol 7.jpeg|left|thumb|[[Masami Eiri]] attempted to encode the [[Schumann Resonances]] Factor into [[Protocol 7]], causing his dismissal from [[Tachibana General Laboratories]] and his subsequent suicide.]]

<p style="text-align:justify">A computer screen reads, "All Reset…Return" The back screen has many English words on it like, raw, mean, and lastly, sad. Past scenes of the show seem to rewind in a quick manner. The computer screen goes blank.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify">More old photos from the newsreel collection are shown. This time the photos are of people and historical events. The male announcer says, "Vannevar Bush put forward a new plan to extend memories called MEMEX, in 1945. It was a system to review information in a microfilm on a half transparent screen. He planned to compress information and access it quickly. Bush led the Manhatten Project, an experiment with the atom bomb. He also made a basis for multimedia at the same time."</p>

<p style="text-align:justify">It is light outside. The power lines are humming. The door to Lain's house opens. A combination of Japanese and Western style breakfast items is being served. Mika pushes herself away from the table and says, "It was a nice meal." She has left some food on her plate. Her dad notices this and quips, "There's a little left." Mom says, "She's on a diet." Mika scolds her, "Don't say such a thing." Mom is eating rice. (Still her favorite thing to do- Shades) Dad informs her, "Some merchandise may come today. Please pay for it when it comes." His wife guesses, "A computer part again?" He does not respond. Both continue to eat their breakfast. Dad glances at the empty chair at the table. It is almost as if he is looking for someone else to be there. Such is not the case. This is a family of three, not four, so of course there is only a place setting for three. He says, "Say." His wife replies, "What?" He continues to stare at the empty chair. It almost appears as if he has a half remembered memory about someone sitting in the chair but can't bring it to the surface. He dismisses the thought, "No…nothing."</p>
<p style="text-align:justify">Lights reflect off of the mirror ball at Cyberia. A dance track pounds bass through the air. JJ the disc jockey looks up from his booth and sees Lain. He puts his fingers to his mouth and whistles to get her attention. His attempt is successful and she looks his direction. JJ gestures with his finger for Lain to come to him. Lain walks over to his booth. He bends down and gets an envelope. He tells Lain, "You forgot this." Lain asks, "What?" JJ moves to hand her the envelope. "Here- you forgot this yesterday. I'll trash it if you don't need it." Lain asks, "Did I forget this?" JJ replies, "I said you did." Lain gingerly takes the envelope from JJ's hand. She opens it on the dance floor and empties its contents into her hand. It is a microchip. Lain's eye widen. The sound of the music goes silent to her as she focuses all of her attention on the item in her hand.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify">The door has been left open to Lain's house. Scenes are shown of the path once taken by Lain on her way to school. She is not at her usual place on the train. (A really cool song by Chabo plays in the background throughout the next sequence-Shades)</p>
<p style="text-align:justify">Another photo of a man is exhibited. The male announcer says, "John C. Lilly searched the human unconsciousness with an experiment that cut off the senses by using drugs and an isolation tank. He thought that he was connected to something like an existence in space. He called it E.C.C.O., Earth Coincidence Control Office, which he led." Images of an isolation tank and alien type figures are shown. Next the image of a dolphin swimming underwater is shown. The male announcer states, "After that, Lilly became a researcher of dolphins. Dolphins can communicate in water via ultrasonic waves of a wide range.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify">Girls are walking to school. Alice stops and looks up at the building. Juri and Reika call her name, "Alice!" They run and catch up with her. Reika asks, "Where should we go tonight?" Juri tugs on Alice's arm and pleads, "Cyberia! Cyberia!" Alice replies, "Sure." She then reaches for her pocket Navi and says, "I'll send a mail." Juri and Reika look at each other with curious expressions. Juri asks, "Alice, who are you sending mail to?" Alice seems to ponder the question. Her Navi screen is set to its mail server. She doesn't seem to be able to remember who it is she wanted to write. Juri thinks she know who Alice had in mind and asks, "Will you call her again?" Alice asks, "Who?" Juri points to someone in the crowd of girls. It is Chisa. Alice says, "Chisa?" Juri replies, "Yes, Yomada Chisa. We took her to Cybria once because you suggested it. But she didn't seem interested whatsoever." Reika quips, "It seems useless." Alice says, "I see." Alice then looks down and smiles. Her friends inquire what is on her mind. Alice replies, "Nothing. I just had a strange thought." Reika repeats, "A strange thought?" Alice recites, "It never happened if there is no memory of it." Reika asks, "Memory?" Alice continues, "Someone never existed if there is no memory of them." Reika and Juri exchange quizzical glances with each other. Reika finally asks, "What are you talking about?" Alice replies, "It has to be no one then." She starts to walk to class and says, "Now let's hurry so we can study." Reika and Juri yell, "Alice", and run to catch up with her.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify">At Cyberia, Myu-Myu, Masayuki, and Taro are seated around a table. Lain is still there. Masayuki looks up and gently elbows Taro. Taro lazily asks, "What?" Masayuki points and Taro looks up to see Lain. She says to him, "I promised you before." Taro seems confused, "Huh…What?" Lain clarifies, "I'll go on a date with you." Myu- Myu almost falls out of her seat when she hears the statement. There is a moment of silence as her words sink in with all three children. Lain repeats, "I'll go out on a date with you." Myu-Myu is beyond jealous. "Really? Did you really say that?" Taro seems confused. "Did I promise?" Myu-Myu answers for him, "No way! No way!" Taro closes his eyes and says, "Even if I did, I don't want to date the current you, Lain." Myu- Myu snaps, "Taro, you idiot." Lain says, "She is the same as me. I am myself. I am only one person." Taro's eyes open wide. Myu-Myu and Masayuki sit back in shock. Lain has an angry look in her eyes.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify">Masayuki, Myu Myu, and Taro are playing a scissors, paper, and stone type of game. Masayuki whines, "I lost again." The three are crossing a street. Taro says, "Let's play." Myu Myu says, "Hurry! Hurry!" Masayuki cries, "Wait for me!" Myu Myu scolds him, "Moron." Taro stops to attend to his beeping Navi. It is shaped like a gun. He pushes a button and says, "A mail?" Myu Myu peeks over his shoulder, "What? What?" The screen reads "KIDS Technology." Lain's image appears briefly then quickly disappears. Myu Myu puts her hands on her hips and asks, "Who is that girl?" Taro replies, "No… I don't know her." Masayuki finally catches up and asks, "What?"</p>
<p style="text-align:justify">It is nighttime. Light can be seen from Lain's bedroom window. Taro's voice can be heard, "Awesome." Taro and Lain are standing in her room. Taro is impressed by the complexity of her Navi system. He continues, "You made this very well." Pressure gauges spin and steam is released. Taro says, "I see. This synchronizes those parallel processors. It's not smart, but it is extendible. How do you cool this thing down?" Lain softly says, "Taro." Taro does not seem to hear her. He excitedly attempts to answer his own question. "Is this liquid carbon?" he asks. Lain says, "Sit over there." Taro says, "Huh?" and turns toward Lain.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify">A teenage boy and his little sister are also walking down the street. The twosome draw near Taro, Myu Myu and Masayuki. The teen says to Taro, "You're machine looks good." Taro looks at him and says, "What?" The teen is the Accela boy who killed himself at Cyberia. The teen says, "I also altered mine a little." His sister pulls his sleeve and says, "Hurry brother! Hurry! Hurry! Mom is waiting!" He answers, "I know," then to Taro and company he says, "Bye." The brother and sister walk away. Myu Myu and Masayuki start to run. Myu Myu yells, "Go! Go!" Masayuki pleads "Let's toss for it again!" Taro has not moved. He looks down at his Navi then follows his friends. Myu Myu mock threatens him, "Taro, I'll leave you!" Masayuki is still whining, "It's not fair. Let's toss for it again." Taro and a man walk by each other. The man is talking to himself, "I'll quit. I'll quit that damned company. They make me do this job…" He is Masami Eiri. He shakes his fist angrily and continues his jabbering, "They look down on me…" Taro puts his Navi away and joins his friends. Masami is still walking and grumbling, "I'll quit, I'll quit." He looks up at two men fixing a street light. It is Carl and the short guy. Masami stops to watch them work for a few minutes. He then resumes his walking and grumbling, "I'll quit…quit…I'm definitely quitting today!"</p>
<p style="text-align:justify">Taro seats himself in front of Lain's main Navi screen. Lain places an object down in front of him. "You know what this is don't you?" she asks. It is the microchip she received at Cyberia from JJ. Taro looks shocked. Lain asks, "You are Taro aren't you?" A bead of sweat forms on his brow. His stunned expression changes to one of concern. Lain asks, "You are a Knight, aren't you?" Taro looks like a deer that was caught in the headlights. He turns and looks at Lain. She is standing over him. She does not look happy. Fear spreads across Taro's face. He cries, "You are… the true Lain!" Lain states, "I'm not sure if there's another me in the Wired or not. But in the real world, there is no other me than myself." Lain leans down to get closer to Taro. She continues, "One other me with flesh only appeared in the club. It would be enough to modify the memories of those who were there." Taro casts his eyes away from Lain's face. He stammers, "I can't…" Then Taro jumps out of the chair and moves away from Lain. He accidentally falls to the floor. Lain is standing over him. Several wall mounted computer screens turn on behind her. Lain commands, "Play track 44." Industrial type music pulsates in her room. Taro's teeth are clenched as he watches her.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify">Scenes of power lines are shown. That familiar hum is in the air.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify">Downstairs the muffled sounds of music can be heard. Lain's parents are in the family room. Her mom is sitting on her dad's lap. Lain's dad says, "It'll all be over soon." His wife does not reply. Lain's dad continues, "Finally…" His wife gently caresses his face and draws her face closer to his. She says, "So please, before it's too late…" Then she plants a big kiss upon his lips.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify">A black screen has text words which read, "It never happened if there is no memory of it. Human memory is just a record. You can rewrite the record." Lain's voice says, "Really?"</p>
<p style="text-align:justify">Mika is sitting in the next room. She is slumped against the wall in the dark. She is still unsuccessfully attempting to speak. Her eyes glance to the left as though she hears something. Mika then positions the pinky and thumb of her right hand to look like a phone. She lifts her "phone" to her head and clearly speaks for the first time in a while. "Pee, pee, pee. Roger. Pee, pee, pee…. Now transmitting. Pee pee , pee…" Mika keeps repeating the same message.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify">Present day…. Present time…. Ha ha ha ha!!!!!</p>
<p style="text-align:justify">Upstairs the music is still blaring. Lain begins to walk towards Taro. He is very afraid. Lain commands the music to stop. Taro sits up, "It wasn't me. But I know that the data JJ receives has such an effect." Lain crouches down to get more eye level with Taro. Lain shows Taro the microchip again and asks, "If I install this chip, how will I be? Commit suicide? Lose my senses?" Taro snaps, "I don't know. I'm too young to be a formal member of the Knights. I'm only…" Lain interrupts him by shoving the microchip in his mouth. "What will I do," she again asks him. Taro attempts to answer with the object still held in his mouth by Lain. He says, "It's an involatile memory. It'll rewrite the memories that already exist." Lain asks, "What kind of memories?" He replies, "I don't know." Lain takes the chip out of his mouth. Taro breathes a sigh of relief. He stands up and informs Lain, "The Knights are not just crackers, Lain." She turns her head to look at him. Taro says, "You are strange. So the Knights became interested in you. The Knights fight in order to make only one truth real." Lain appears confused by this so she says, "I can't understand. What's the one truth?" Taro replies, "I've never been told because I'm not a formal member of Knights. But it's true. Truth is strong because it is true. Truth is justice because it is true. Don't you think it's very persuasive? Don't you also want such a truth?" No reply from Lain.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify">The stock opening footage is shown. Lain is in the Wired. She is standing on a deserted street. She is upset. She bends down and starts to cry. All is silent around her. Lain in the Wired's voice asks, "Why are you crying? Because you deleted yourself from everybody's memory?" Lain continues to cry. Lain in the Wired says, "But that's what you wanted, isn't it?" Lain in the Wired appears near Lain. Lain says, "Yes, but…" Lain in the Wired interrupts her, "The information of a dead person won't leak from the Wired again." Lain's crying has subsided to sobs. Lain in the Wired says, "So Lain doesn't need to exist. That's what you wished for, right?" Lain says, "You talk like that man." Lain in the Wired reminds her, "That man? There has been no 'that man'. Even if he exists, he won't get any funny ideas about becoming a god again." Lain notes, "I'm nowhere. If I'm nowhere, what am I? Who am I?" Lain in the Wired says, "You said it yourself." Lain asks, "What?" Lain in the Wired replies, "The Wired is not the upper layer of the real World. He was wrong. The network is a field to transport information. Information doesn't stand still. Information always functions by flowing." Lain says, "I see. Human memory…Personal memory…and the history of mankind." Lain in the Wired says, "Yes. Commonly owned unconsciousness."</p>
<p style="text-align:justify">Taro says, "I should go back. Myu-Myu will get jealous of you." He starts to walk out of the room. Lain says, "Taro, thank you." Taro stops and says, "You…" He turns, walks back to Lain, and plants a kiss on her lips. Lain is stunned. Taro explains his behavior, "It is a date. I am a man." Taro leaves the room. Lain watches him go with a still shocked look on her face. She puts her fingers to her lips. She retrieves a gum like substance from her mouth and looks at it.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify">The two Lains are now on a train. Lain in the Wired continues, "Do you think human beings can create a way to store such an enormous memory by themselves?" Lain says, "The Wired was only for connecting. But where was it connected to?" The two Lains are now on a stairway. Lain in the Wired says, "Do you think humans need to know?" Lain asks, "What?" Lain in the Wired says, "Although they haven't known, they could make a go for it." The two Lains are now at Cyberia watching the people dance. Lain in the Wired says, "The human world has created its own god and they've prayed to it. They have defined the world in their own way." JJ the DJ is spinning tracks in his booth. Lain says, "I hate what you just said." The two Lains have made their way to a classroom. Lain in the Wired says, "Even if you don't like it, it is Lain. It is me. You know this. Yes, Lain is not human." Lain in the Wired laughs. Lain is looking out a classroom window. Lain in the Wired says, "Lain exists everywhere. Lain watches still. Yes, Lain is a goddess." Lain says, "You're wrong! You're wrong!" The two Lains are outside at night on a busy street. Lain in the Wired says, "Its easy to be a goddess. I think its easier than being a human." The two Lains are on the roof at the school. Lain in the Wired says, "You won't need to do anything. You should only be and observe. Nobody looks down on Lain. Nobody hates Lain." Lain looks dejected and says, "That…" but doesn't finish. Lain in the Wired says, "Well Lain, perhaps you should start again, since you reset them." Lain angrily turns and yells at Lain in the Wired, "Stop it!" Lain in the Wired looks stunned and her image begins to tune out and get fuzzy. Lain in the Wired disappears. Lain is alone. Lain in the Wired delivers a parting remark, "So what are you Lain?" Lain falls to her knees and says, "I…I…what am I?"</p>
<p style="text-align:justify">Yet more newsreel photos are shown. The photo of a man is onscreen. The announcer states, "Ted Nelson who learned from renegade pioneers Vannevar Bush and John C. Lilly claimed a plan called 'Xanadu' (So that' s who is responsible for that awful but strangely addicting movie starring Olivia Newton John. One of my guilty pleasures- Shades) that is an electric library in a satellite that can be used from anywhere on earth via electromagnetic waves and a telephone receiver. (Oops, wrong Xanadu. I'll have to continue my pursuit of the creator of that movie elsewhere- Shades). It is a Mongolian Utopia where every text culture will exist forever. That is why it is called Xanadu, because its hypertext can make it real in the world. Ted Nelson will go down in history as a proponent of it."</p>

<p style="text-align:justify">The voice of Lain's dad commands, "Come here, Lain." Lain looks up. Her father's face looms large in the sky above her. Lain asks, "Dad?"</p>
<p style="text-align:justify">Lain is wearing her school uniform and standing outside a door with the two men in black. The shorter one opens it for her. Mika and her parents are in the room. A hand pushes Lain into the room. Lain looks on in silence at her motionless family. Another hand grabs Lain's hand and leads her away. It is her dad and he is taking her to another room. The room is fully furnished. They head to another door.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify">Lain is in her bear suit.(That should make Balto happy, but it still scares me!-Shades Yipee! - Balto) She and her father are sitting at a table that is floating in the air. Her dad says, "Lain you don't need to wear such a thing anymore."(Ha- looks like someone besides me thinks that bear suit is…wrong- Shades But it's fun! - Balto) Lain concedes to his statement with a little smile. She asks, "Dad, do you know?" He replies, "What?" Lain stammers, "I…everyone…" He tries to fill in the blanks, "You love everyone? Isn't that right?" Lain shakes her head and starts to cry. Her dad says, "Lain, next time I'll prepare a good tea. And a madeleine. Certainly that would taste good."</p>
<p style="text-align:justify">At the same moment in time, Lain is sitting in front of her Navi. She turns her head and sees a blurred figure at her door. It is her dad and the "Lain" wearing the school uniform. Lain asks, "Is that me?" "Lain," replies, "Yes. This is me." Lain asks, "Who are those people." "Lain" answers, "I don't know because I'm you." Lain's face falls, "It's not true…everything must be a lie. Why do you do that?"</p>

<p style="text-align:justify">The city is shown at night. Lain's voice says, "There are just not memories of the past. There are also memories of today and tomorrow."</p>
<p style="text-align:justify">An image of the Earth spinning is the next topic of the newsreel. The announcer says, "The Earth itself has peculiar electromagnetic waves. There are always resonances at 8HZ in ELF bands between the ground and the ionosphere. It is called the Schumann Resonance. It is a brain wave of the Earth. However we still don't know how it affects humans. The human population of the Earth will become the same number as the number of neurons in the brain. Douglas Rachov claims that it will awaken the consciousness of the Earth itself by connecting humans to each other via a network. The network has spread so quickly, it has become like a neural network in the brain. Therefore the Earth itself will become one neural network of electromagnetic synapse signals."</p>

<p style="text-align:justify">A man says, "I declare." A woman responds, "Really!" They are a nice looking young couple who are walking in the shopping district of the city. The woman grabs his arm and says, "Wait." It is Alice. She is about 22 years old. She has let her hair grow longer. Alice says to her boyfriend, "I did what you wanted last time. Very tolerantly." She grins and says, "I'll choose a curtain for our bedroom." He boyfriend smiles and agrees, "Okay, okay." Someone is watching the couple. The boyfriend adds, "I'll do whatever you like." Alice teases, "Yes, you are a good student." The couple then laughs and continue to walk. Alice's attention is drawn to an overhead walkway. Her boyfriend asks, "What happened?" Lain is on the walkway. She is peering over the railing and watching Alice. Alice is mesmerized by Lain. She turns to her boyfriend and says, "Sorry… wait a bit." Alice then heads for the walkway. Her boyfriend yells, "Hey, wait!"</p>
<p style="text-align:justify">Lain is again alone in her room. She is looking upwards. Lain says, "The one truth, God." The Wired God replies, "Yes it is me."</p>

<p style="text-align:justify">Alice runs up the steps and closes in on Lain. Lain smiles at her. Alice returns the smile and walks closer to her. Alice bends down to get eye level with her and says, "Good afternoon." Lain softly returns the greeting. Alice asks, "I've met you haven't I?" Lain does not answer. Alice gets an idea and says, "Were you a student where I taught as a student teacher?" She answers her own question with, "No, that's not it. Hmm." Lain continues to smile at her. Lain finally says, "How do you do?" (Lain uses a very formal Japanese greeting here that is used exclusively for the first time you meet a person- Shades) Alice replies, "What?" She is confused by the use of such a formal greeting because she was convinced that she knew this girl. Lain stresses that they have never met by saying, "It is how do you do?" Alice stands corrected, "Really? Well, how do you do? I am Alice. Don't you think my name sounds funny? I'm a bit embarrassed about it. And you are?" Lain replies, "Lain." Alice stands up and repeats the name, "Lain." The name seems to resonate in her mind but she is unable to make a connection. Her boyfriend has joined them and asks, "Do you know her?" Alice replies, "No. Wrong person." Alice bends down towards Lain and says, "Goodbye. Maybe I'll see you again sometime." Lain smiles. Alice gets up and says, "Bye." Her boyfriend says, "Bye, Lain." The couple walk off together. Lain continues to watch them and says, "Yes. I can see you anytime."</p>

Long summary

Stock opening footage replays scenes of the city and its people at night. A female voice says, "If you want to avoid the pain, you should believe in God. Whether you believe in God or not, he is always with you."

[Title: Protocol Layer 09]

Old newsreel style footage is showing scenes of a desert. A male voice announces over the footage, "On July 4, 1947 an unidentified flying object fell in a New Mexico desert." The footage seems to pan over a strange object. The announcer continues, "It has still not been proven what it was. Guesses became facts and rumors became histories."

The power lines are humming. The sad look has returned to her face.

More newsreel information is shown. Vannevar Bush, the head of the department at MIT, was also of the twelve 'MJ-12' members."

Lain commands her Navi, "Connect Wired." The menu screen appears. A look of fury is etched on her face.

Masami Eiri attempted to encode the Schumann Resonances Factor into Protocol 7, causing his dismissal from Tachibana General Laboratories and his subsequent suicide.

More old photos from the newsreel collection are shown. He also made a basis for multimedia at the same time."

Lights reflect off of the mirror ball at Cyberia. The sound of the music goes silent to her as she focuses all of her attention on the item in her hand.

Another photo of a man is exhibited. Dolphins can communicate in water via ultrasonic waves of a wide range.

At Cyberia, Myu-Myu, Masayuki, and Taro are seated around a table. Lain has an angry look in her eyes.

It is nighttime. Lain says, "Sit over there." Taro says, "Huh?" and turns toward Lain.

Taro seats himself in front of Lain's main Navi screen. Taro's teeth are clenched as he watches her.

Downstairs the muffled sounds of music can be heard. Lain's parents are in the family room. Her mom is sitting on her dad's lap. Lain's dad says, "It'll all be over soon." His wife does not reply. Lain's dad continues, "Finally…" His wife gently caresses his face and draws her face closer to his. She says, "So please, before it's too late…" Then she plants a big kiss upon his lips.

Mika is sitting in the next room. Pee pee , pee…" Mika keeps repeating the same message.

Upstairs the music is still blaring. Don't you also want such a truth?" No reply from Lain.

Taro says, "I should go back. She retrieves a gum like substance from her mouth and looks at it.

Yet more newsreel photos are shown. Ted Nelson will go down in history as a proponent of it."

Lain is wearing her school uniform and standing outside a door with the two men in black. The shorter one opens it for her. Mika and her parents are in the room. A hand pushes Lain into the room. Lain looks on in silence at her motionless family. Another hand grabs Lain's hand and leads her away. It is her dad and he is taking her to another room. The room is fully furnished. They head to another door.

At the same moment in time, Lain is sitting in front of her Navi. Why do you do that?"

An image of the Earth spinning is the next topic of the newsreel. Therefore the Earth itself will become one neural network of electromagnetic synapse signals."

Lain is again alone in her room. She is looking upwards. Lain says, "The one truth, God." The Wired God replies, "Yes it is me."

A sheet of paper has the words "The effectiveness of the applying Schumann Resonance to the Wired Network" written on it. The male announcer says, "Eiri Masami was a chief research worker for Tachibana Lab." The sheet of paper has the name Masami Eiri M. Sc written on the bottom of it. The announcer continues his discussion of Masami, "He improved the theory of the neural network of the Earth itself. He said that the unconsciousness of all humankind would be connected to a wireless network with out devices by means of the Schumann Effect." An image of two men working at a computer is shown. One is Masami Eiri. The other man bears more than a strong resemblance to Lain's dad. The announcer continues, "He added a function to use the Schumann Resonance to the 7th protocol in code by his own discretion."

A railroad track is marked with a placard bearing the number 13. Rain is gently falling. People are walking by the track. The announcer says, "When Tachibana Lab learned of this they dismissed him. One week later, Eiri was found dead, killed after being run over at the Yamanote Line railway." The people are investigators. They carefully collect the remains of Masami Eiri. There is an obituary for him in the paper along with a photograph of his face.

Lain seems to be standing outside. The power lines emit their hum. A figure is standing down away, directly across from Lain. Lain strains to see who the figure is. It is a man in a lab coat. He has some kind of thick adhesive tape wrapped around one arm and his torso. It looks as if he has been taped back together. He has a bare chest under his coat. Long hair cannot conceal that it is the face of Masami Eiri. He has two red lines painted vertically on his face. One line is drawn under each eye. He stares at Lain.
